Advantages: sales are good value
Disadvantages: tax!!!
I am a fan of budget airlines. I like to travel and as much as possible so budget airlines are the way the go. I'll be really disappointed if they all start disappearing or going under.
Ryan Air is one that I've used a lot in the past. I have never had a bad flight. The service is always ok, planes are ok, comfortable enough. Nothing outstanding but what would you expect for a budget airline? Budget price, budget service. That suits me just fine.
However, I think that Ryan Air have gone down hill a lot in the last year or so. It makes me so so cross that they are adding so much tax to everything! I was looking for flights to France the other day and going one way was 49p! Brilliant! Or so I thought. With taxes it came to £120! One way! That is terrible and so misleading.
What exactly are the taxes for? It costs an extra £20 to take a bag! Who doesn't take a bag on holiday?! The thing that makes me most mad is that it costs on average £5 each way, per person to pay on a card. Of course, there is no other way than to pay so there is no choice except if you have a Visa Electron card and then bizarely it's free. I bet it won't be for long though.
I think it is disgusting that so much can be added for tax as it doesn't give an accurate price until you are actually paying and then all of these charges are added. If you think you have bargain flights and so book a hotel and plan your holiday and then go through the process of buying flights you will be very disappointed.
Saying that though, I did get some flights in the Ryan Air sale a week or so ago that were an absolute baragin! I am flying to Ireland for £2 return and then to Holland for £2 return later in the year. Now that IS good value and no taxes were added. I did opt to take only hand luggage though and paid on a Visa Electron card otherwise it would have cost me £47 instead of £2. That's a huge difference and that is without all of the other taxes.

- 20/08/09 It is misleading! Why dont they tell you the cost of the flight at the start instead of telling you they are a pound and when you pay they are more like 200 pound! |

- 15/08/09 The taxes are imposed by the government - of the UK when flying from the UK and other countries when flying from those. Blame the Uk government for not relaxing the taxes - other European governments have done so temporarily to try to encourage more passengers.
The other payment is "charges" and these are the costs imposed by airports which Ryanair must pay to fly there.
It's not really misleading, after all there can't be many people who really believe you can fly somewhere for only 1p are there? |

- 12/08/09 the tax thing is why I normaly fly BA. After all the extra charges are taken into concideration BA aren't much more expencive than Ryanair and at least the price you see with BA is including the taxes etc. |
