Disadvantages: shocking customer care (from others experiences, not mine as only used once)
I was kind of forced into travelling Ryanair, you see, a few years ago I was stranded in London during freak snow storms we had one January in something like 2007 I think. I had refused to travel GNER back home to North East because of personal issues when I worked with them, and treat unfairly, plus trains had been heavilly disrupted and cancelled due to the bad weather so train travel wasn;t an option as no trains, then easyJet who run direct flights Stansted to Newcastle, who I had first flown with a few days before to go to London wanted £132 for one-way ticket after I was left without a flight, so refused to pay, however at the time Ryanair was still a fairly cheap & fair airline, they wanted £35.18 for a one-way flight to Blackpool, OK so Blackpool was on the other side of the country I must of been mad to consider it, but then I checked and seen trains were able to operate on the pennine route back home, so I got that flight.
I booked it, very easy process, and this was before they got ridiculous so I could just turn up at checkin at the airport the next morning and checkin, no paying for checkin back then. Very easy, staff they had at their handling agent in Stansted fairly pleasant checked in at like 0500am for a 0650 departure, but then I board the aircraft and my god it was horrid, the bright yellow everywhere, it looked old, run down and dirty looking yet it was clean & tidy but just looked run down. I sit down, OK seats, not very uncomfortable so it was OK, the cabin sounded Swedish, their English was very bad and considering this was an English domestic route you'd not expect it, if anything I would of expected Irish but at least cler English speaking crew, their safety demo was OK, i have seen better and as I have done cabin crew training, although am not crew, I chose ground work, I didn't think it was very clear and if I remember rightly they missed out about the brace position on the safety card which legally is supposed to be pointed out but I can't remember I just remember they missed something important. The flight was however ontime and crew were not overly rude but not the nicest of crews, even if it's 0650am I expect to be greeted with a smile, even if it's fake & forced its your job, but couldn't complain didn't really have anything to complain about.
Now-a-days Ryanair are rediculous though, although I have not flown with them since and had not really any problems the once I did fly back in 2007, I am reluctant to fly with them, they charge for checkin for christ sakes which aint a problem for me as I can generally checkin online now but even that has a charge, I can't see how they can charge for something EVERY SINCE PASSENGER has to do to fly, and the fact they charge for every payment option except their own card is stupid. Plus from working at airports for the past 4 Summers I have seen so many passengers left stranded and staff being so rude & unhelpful, I know these are handling agents staff but it's Ryanair they are representing sometimes in Ryanair uniform and its Ryanair's policies they follow, I am reluctant to spend more than a small amount incase I am left with a flight.
You can however get a good deal with them, as long as you don't pay for the flight with anything other than a Mastercard Pre-paid Card from Ryanair which NOBODY has, take no luggage and travel to airports in the middle of nowhere you can get a good deal, I am hoping to go to Dublin for a night or two with them, I'd never take a holiday using Ryanair as baggage fees are high so would only travel when I can take just hand luggage. But still look around and they regulary have "cheap" fare deals but only on flights to nowhere without luggage or checking in.
Summary: Ryanair - can be ok can be dreadful expect nothing
