Advantages: Service, Comfort, Facilities
Disadvantages: Haven't found any yet!
Singapore is a diverse mx of many cultures. With no real 'Sinagaporean' values this is a truly cosmopolitan and international country which has learnt to cater for an international market without compromise.
This is reflected in their national airline, which remains one of the few that hasn't given in to cheap frills at high prices.
Always among the first to experiment with the latest in-flight technology and comfort, they have gained an enviable reputation on the world stage as a major player in the long haul market. Thus every flight I have had with them has been excellent in in almost every respect.
Unlike many of the Asian airlines they cater very well for western tastes and the menu in all classes has several options rather than the usual 2 or 3. Coupled with the generous legroom and much better than average seats this makes even the longest of flights far more enjoyable than on other airlines.
The in-flight entertainment is the now standard in-seat tv with multiple channels and games console built in. Their latest addition incorporates a hard disk video system that allows you instant access to hundreds of movies, doccumentaries, music video and TV programs at the touch of a button. Add to this the ability to send email and sms text messages from the comfort of your seat and you will hardly have time to get bored. And all this in economy class.
As always though it is the little things that make the trip more palatable. Even the economy class seats have fold around headrests for addes comfort, and the inflight travellers pack with pen, socks, blindfold, earplugs and toothbrush outshines everyone elses.
The real bonus though with this airline is simply the fact that any stopover will be in Singapore itself. Though you may only be there for a few hours, even your time in the airport has been carefully considdered and catered for. Putting asside the huge array of shops and eateries the airline itself offers free internet access and newspapers to customers in the departure lounge, something usually reserved only for business class pasengers.
If however you have to wait more than 5 hours for your connection why not check in your hand baggage for free at the cloakroom and go for a free tour of the city in one of the houry tourist buses. This is one freebie that no other airport offers, and yet is so worthwhile.
Having flown with Singapore airlines many times, I have never had a delay, and have always found the staff to be impecible and perfectly accomodating. Any traveller more used to a 'normal' airline, or a no frills experience will feel as if they have arrived in paradise.
This is how flying should be. A part of the whole travel experience rather than the inconvienient beginning and ending of your trip.
As a final note of advice, while booking my next trip to New Zealand online I found the airlines own website to be cheaper than any of the major alternatives and cheaper still than expedia.co.uk or ebookers.co.uk
Next time youfly, give them a go, you won't regret it.
