I recently flew with Singapore Airlines from London to Sydney, via Singapore. The following is based on the 4 separate flight taken in December 2008, and January 2009. This included 2 flights on the new A380.


PRE-FLIGHT
Singapore has an online check-in system that seems ideal in helping beat the airport check-in hassle. It certainly made the getting your bags on the plane part quicker. Unfortunately my Husband and I were unable to secure seats next to each other for both legs to London through online check-in which seemed strange as in both cases we logged into the Singapore Airlines website as soon as possible to find most seats already gone. Could not find any information on their website that would tell us how the seats had seemingly been assigned before the official check-in time, or why passengers would booked together would be seated at opposite ends of the plane. This problem was experienced by several other passengers too, which made us wonder as to how well the online check-in system worked in practise.


FOOD & DRINK
Overall the quality of food was pretty good. It was significantly better when flying out of Sydney and London, compared to the meals flying out of Singapore. The only real problem I had with the meals was the Singapore noodles that were served as breakfast when flying out of Singapore. The smell seemed to infiltrate the entire cabin, and the noodles were not very nice, especially first thing in the morning. On the upside, we were served with ice creams when flying out of Sydney, which was a nice snack. The drinks available included a wide variety of soft drinks, juices, alcoholic mixes and even Singapore Slings.


SERVICE
Service was excellent on all flights. Staff were helpful and attentive. They were also more than willing to assist in switching seats so my Husband and I could be seated together. They also provided drinks, juice and water, to keep you hydrated between meals, always important for long haul flights.


ENTERTAINMENT
While the entertainment facilities varied depending on the age of the plane, it was easily adequate on the older plane and excellent on the newer Airbus. There was a large range of movies and TV shows to view, an impressive number of entertaining games to play and a library of music that ensured everybody would have something to listen to.


CABIN
Again the style and décor of the cabin depended on the age of the plane, but all were tastefully coloured. They even had Christmas decorations to decorate the cabin, given our flights were over the festive season. I thought the Airbus was particularly tasteful in terms of colour scheme, and there is an illusion of more space. My one problem with all the cabins was that there were no individual air conditioning ducts. I found that I got hot and quiet flushed in the face and would have liked to have individual ducts.


OVERALL EXPERIENCE
I would not hesitate to fly with Singapore Airlines again. During the 4 flights I recently took, which were all over the Christmas/New Year period, the staff were friendly and helpful, the cabins were clean, and delays were at a minimum.
