Iberia

As a student, travelling to Brazil was going to be costly, so naturally, I scrimped and saved every penny possible. This meant getting the cheapest flights as well. Flying out from Heathrow to Rio de Janeiro and returning from Buenos Aires, in Argentina, 6 weeks later, both via Madrid, turned out to be the best option at a very ... reasonable price of £550 with Iberia.
The outbound flight was on time which was a good start, and although the plane flying from London to Madrid was a bit small and rickety, I held much higher hopes for the Airbus A340 which was to take us to Rio de Janeiro.
The only reason I held higher expectations than I perhaps should have, is that a few months prior a friend of mine flew to Portugal in economy (not Iberia) and said the seats were fine and there were screens in headrests to play games and watch films. So I figured for a 10hour trans-Atlantic flight would be of a similar standard.
I was greeted with dowdy brown seats which reclined about six inches and a tiny screen hanging from the ceiling about 14 inches across. In front there was very little leg room so you couldn't even slump in the chair to try and get comfortable.
Due to the flight being barely half full, I moved from the middle aisle, to an empty double window seat to try and get some shut-eye. At some point during my few hours sleep, someone had managed to steal my pillow from beneath my sleeping head. When I requested a replacement from the airline staff, I was greeted with a series of 'huffs' and 'tuts' and then a replacement tossed in my general direction.
The food was okay considering it was plane food, which was one slight saving grace. However, it was nothing compared with the food experienced on a bus ride (yes, a bus) from Rio de Janeiro to Iguazu, where they produced some pork chops and mashed potato from somewhere. If a coach can provide that level of food, then surely so should plane.
Nevertheless, the food is really a side issue from the main focus of flight comfort and quality. It was poor, and hopefully, cost depending, it is the last time I fly with Iberia. Read the complete review |

We booked with Iberia because they were half price in comparison to easyjet who wanted £800 pounds to gran canaria for two adults Iberia were only £400 so bargain we thought, upon arrival at Heathrow all flights had been delayed due to an incident at Gatwick, we were put onto an earlier flight as otherwise we would not of made our ... connection in Madrid, we were rushed through the airport to sit on the plane for the next two hours, I appreciate that the delay was not Iberias fault but while on the plane there was no information given out at all, the first we new of a departure time was when the plane moved. We made our connection in Madrid and flew onto Gran Canaria, here we realised our bags had not arrived, we went to the Iberia desk were the first words the Iberia worker said were HOW MANY BAGS LOST, surely an apology of some description would of been appropriate, it felt as though we were disrupting her day rather than the other way around, when we asked if they would be there tommorow she just shrugged her shoulders as if to say she didnt care and could we please hurry up and go. We eventually got our bags after 2 days which involved us chasing iberia. On the return flight the passengers infront of us could not board as the plane seats they were allocated were broken, again we were delayed however the captain on this flight did to his credit keep everyone informed, there was some problem with the brakes but they got the all clear and we took off two hours late. For our last leg we changed and flew with BA which was amazing in comparison. One last moan the flight atendants on Iberia look like the zombies out of Michael Jacksons Thriller, and there should be a size restriction for there fat arses, if that air stewedess knocked my friend one more time with her fat arse he was going to slap her. Terrible service on the way back from Buenos Aires to Madrid. A 12 hour flight, and were offered a single drink, once, with the foul "dinner". My wife had no pillow on her seat when we boarded, so she pressed the call button. A stewardess arrived 10 minutes later and just looked at her, frowning. She said in Spanish that she ... hadn't got a pillow. The stewardess shrugged, said they didnt carry spares (it wasnt a spare!!) and "what do you want me to do about it?" Luckily we attracted the attention of another more helpful stewardess who magically found - a spare.
The customer service was atrocious. Rude staff, surly looks, no service, and also no information at Barajas airport. Some guys asked the Iberia staff where the plane for Mexico took off from. The Iberia guy said "well, the computer says its the other terminal. But it usually comes in to this one, so I don't know". Er... cheers then.
Wont be flying Iberia again. Read the complete review |
