Advantages: Excellent service, Excellent food, and free entertainment and alcohol
Disadvantages: The flight eventually ends..., they don't use 747's, legroom in coach is terrible.
This past Easter I flew to London from Buffalo, New York, USA, via Philadelphia, and I can honestly say I have found the PERFECT airline, though it remains to be seen just how long they will maintain their philosophy and the high quality of service. While I do prefer certain types of aircraft, namely the most awesome of them all, the Boeing 747, the Airbus A-330?s that USAirways uses are quite accommodating, though quite lacking in legroom in the center coach section. The window isles seemed to have more room between the seats. That, however, was the only fault I can come up with about this airline, and believe me, I?ve flown just about every major carrier flying, past and present. The in-flight entertainment comes via LCD display screens, resembling small TV?s in ever seat back, and giving total control to YOU, by way of a remote control that is cleverly integrated into the side of your armrest, connected by a retractable wire. The selection is impressive?I watched ?The Green Mile?, ?Serendipity?, ?Return to Me? got bored as there was plenty to watch. There is also a vast selection of audio, as well as the standard ?radio? stations which you tune into via the controls on the armrest. Best, and ?Training Day?, in their entirety. My son watched all the children?s selections, and never of all, unlike most airlines, the headsets and the service was totally free, usually costing about $3-$5 per person. The food was fantastic, definitely not your typical airline food! I had this cheese pasta dish that was outstanding! Luckily my son didn?t want his, so I had another one?and with the meal came a roll, drinks, cookies, and salad. Oh, and the alcohol was FREE! Unfortunately as I was picking up a rental car upon arrival at Gatwick, I was unable to indulge on the way over, but you can bet I made up for that on the way back! (I was picked up at the airport and driven home). This flight over was the prequel to a fantastic visit ?back home? to
the UK, and I cannot wait until July 2003, when we will all come back for two weeks?wife and all three kids! Timeliness was paramount, and again, USAirways shone like a diamond! The flight from Buffalo left dead on time, got to Philly on time, left for Gatwick on time and arrived in Gatwick 30 minutes late, but that was not the airlines fault, it was due to the increased security measures, which forced us to circle in a holding pattern for a little while, but that was no problem for anyone. The return flight was just as punctual, leaving and arriving right on time if not early each step of the way. I was thoroughly impressed. God bless Pan Am, but they were the worst when it came to timeliness, often being HOURS late! As far as the airfare, I hope it is a sign of things to come, but somehow doubt it?the price was so cheap! It would have cost us more to fly from Buffalo to Chicago than it did to fly round trip to London. Hopefully they keep it affordable, but time will tell. If they maintain the low price and the high quality of service, USAirways will no doubt dominate the Atlantic routes!

- 20/05/02 Good op - I think that US Airways has the best economy-class inflight entertainment systems. You can pause the films while you go for a walk and then when you return you can carry on watching without having missed anything. |
