Advantages: Great service, 'fun' economy environment
Disadvantages: cramped seating on 747-200
Having recently flown Virgin to Chicago, I was delighted with the on-board service which was professional and friendly. Although it was a full flight, the attendants coped admirably. In fact, have to say that service in Virgin's economy was Better than on United's International First!
From the word Go it was an easy flight, with a very ordered queuing system for check-in, a pretty organised boarding procedure (not like the scrums you get with some airlines), and we took off on time, and arrived early for both outward and return flights.
The meal service was surprisingly good with three choices one of which was vegetarian, and the seatback screen a real bonus. There were a huge array of entertainment and film choices to keep you occupied for the duration of the flight. The only niggle was the super-cramped legroom on the 747-200 - the full pitch could not have been any more than 30 inches. When the person in front reclined their seat, it really strained the eyes to focus on the seatback monitor, which seemed to be inches from your nose! So you'd put your chair back, and the person behind you would put their chair back - like dominos! Whether there are any additional inches on their A340s or 747-400s would be interesting to find out.
Overall highly recommended though if you're taller than average try to get an exit seat, or learn yoga.
