Adelaide International Airport (ADL) ... Adelaide. It is located adjacent to West Beach approximately 8 kilometres (5 miles) from the city-centre. Although owned by the Commonwealth Government, it is operated independently by Adelaide Airport Limited. It is the fourth-largest domestic and sixth-largest international airport in Australia, servicing over 5.8 million passengers annually. First opened on 16 February 1955, the airport was established to replace Parafield Airport as the main airport for Adelaide. It was built on land once used for market gardens and which included wetlands of Patawalonga Creek. Passenger flights are operated from a state-of-the-art dual international/domestic terminal that was opened in 2005.

I had ocassion to use Adelaide airport when I visited Australia not too long ago. They only had one terminal so it was easy for my friends, who picked me up, to get to the airport and arrive in the right place- not like it is at Heathrow for example, where you have to know where you're going! Terminal 1 has three levels, 0, 1 and 2. I arrived at Level 0 and did not use the other levels because I was meeting friends and wanted to get out of the airport to see them. Although not the largest city in Australia, Adelaide is more than large enough to have its own airport. The airport caters for both domestic and international flights, although in its current form the facilities can only handle one 747 Jumbo. In view of the increasing traffic there are plans to build a new international terminal in the not too distant future. For the moment all flights embark and disembark via steps to the ground. There is only one flexible corridor and that is used for the one Jumbo that can be accommodated at any one time.
