Athens Airport is a modenr airport serving both as the main airport to reach Athens and as a hub to the Middle East and the Balkans and off course the Greek islands. I have used this airport to fly in and from Bucharest, Sofia, Cyprus and London. Landing during the day is normally the first opportunity you have to sample the beauty of Greece, there is a bit of green scenery to be seen from the plane and olive trees. Even in winter, the smell once you come out of the plane and the warmth are a far cry from the unpleasantness of London. All ops on Athens airport dated before March 2001 are out-of-date, for the old airport is history. The new one is now operational and sits on the Attica plain like a veritable behemoth, visible from miles around. It helps to have been to the old Hellinikon airport (or just 'Hell' as it was known to many) to appreciate the snappily-titled Eleftherios Venizelos Airport that now serves the 2004 Olympic City. well the old airport of athens was really not the best but the new athens international airport is one of the greatest airports ive ever been... really great i was very surprised!! At last: a great city gets a excellent airport. And when the metro (subway) is finished then u can be in athens in no time. I can easily say, I have never been to a worse airport in my life. I was delayed at Athens for five hours a couple of weeks ago, unable to go through to passport control and it seemed like an eternity. There was nowhere to go, nothing to do, and not even anything decent to eat. I ended up sitting on the floor for three hours, smoking my self senseless. The only good thing about the airport was the fact that I met some fellow travellers and we managed to pass the time together. There was no one to help in our enquiries of getting into the city to try and spend some time doing something enjoyable.
