It is the largest hub of United Airlines (whose headquarters will soon move from nearby Elk Grove Township to downtown Chicago) and the second-largest hub of American Airlines (after Dallas/Fort Worth). It is operated by the City of Chicago Department of Aviation, associated with an umbrella regional authority.

Growing up 20 minutes away from O'Hare and having a frequent flyer membership since the age of 3, I have been here a lot. I have a bit of a sentimental attachment to the airport, although I recognize that most people who have been caught in a layover in Chicago associate it frustratingly with delays and incompetant airline staff. That being said, the airport has plenty to do while you're trapped; check out the outlet of Barbara's bookstore, an independent bookstore whose main outlet is a couple blocks from my house. As a frequent traveller, I find myself connecting through Chicago O'Hare (ORD) at least once a year, and it has become my preferred airport to connect in. The airport is located in Rosemont, IL, 18 miles from the city of Chicago. By car it is approximately a half-hour drive, and there are also bus and rail links which run to Chicago and neighbouring counties. If you are going to Chicago to stay rather than connect you might want to use Midway Airport as it's closer to the city, although is likely to be a more expensive option. Upon arrival at the airport from the UK, you must obviously first clear immigration. In my experience Chicago is by far the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review O'Hare Chicago International Airport: Excessive in size, excessive domestic traffic (107 words)

Chicago O'Hare is the busiest airport in the world in terms of airline traffic. (It is London Heathrow in terms of passangers). But the distances between the gates are not ideal. It is in fact, too long to cross the entire and huge airport. The flights are always delayed, and September 11th makes it dangerous to travel via major US airports. I would rather go by Toronto! (Unless if I lived in the US). I cannot blame airlines such as American Airlines or United Airlines to make it their main hub, but as I said, this is not the ideal transit airport. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review how to get from the airport to the city (189 words)

O'Hare is located 19 miles (30 km) northwest of the Loop, Chicago's main business district. Airport information booths are located in all terminals and are open from 8 A.M. to 8 P.M. daily. There's no shortage of taxis at O'Hare. The fare is metered, and you should expect to pay $30 to $35 for the 40- to 60-minute trip. If you are traveling light, the CTA train is the best. You can depart at Washington Street Station in the Loop and catch a taxi to your final destination. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) operates a train service from O'Hare. Look for the sign leading to the station beginning in the baggage-claim area. The ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review O'Hare Chicago International Airport: Chicago O'Hare - a hair raising experience? (147 words)

This is a really busy airport. The main thing I remember about is was seeing aircraft taking off in all directions and pilot of the 737 taxi-ing to the beginning of the runway in a fashion more akin to driving a go-kart. In terms of efficiency the airport was good. Coming in on the international terminal it was necessary to take all you baggage through customs and then check into a flight in another terminal. Connecting the various terminals there is a very regular above ground railway. This was very good and meant it was very easy to get around. On an international flight they will give you a map of the airport before you land. Check where you need to go as ...  Read the complete review
