Advantages: Huge roads in and out, spacious terminal, quite comfortable, international departures
Disadvantages: 30-40 minutes East of Denver, few local hotels to choose from
Having lived in Wyoming, I had the opportunity to fly in and out of Denver several times. I have travelled through several major international airports and this is probably one of the finest.
Travelling in on the main Toll Road is very easy and parking is not difficult. One nice feature, when I was last there, was if you are able to get in and back out in less than 30 minutes then there was no fee to pay for entering the airport complex. This was true even if you had to park. If I remember correctly, even if you take the main Toll road back to Denver (E-470 which just about encircles Denver now), you have to pay a toll of about $4.00USD for the privilege of having less traffic to contend with. Parking is not bad and actually costs anywhere from $1-3 per hour with the exception of valet parking.
Upon entering the main building, which looks like a huge advertisement for modern art sculptures, I have always found friendly staff on hand to guide or assist you to wherever you are going or to help in finding who you are picking up. The building is unique in style and actually does have a large art display.
Having flown both in-country and international (going in and out of Denver), has never proven difficult and even Customs and Immigration was a breeze compared to other US international airports.
A main disadvantage is that Denver International Airport is about 30-40 minutes east of the city of Denver, Colorado. There are very few hotels to choose from and even less in the way of eating establishments compared to what you would find surrounding most US airports. The distance can also be a disadvantage when you have to pay for a shuttle bus or a taxi into the city.
Actually, when coming in to land, you will think you are landing in the middle of nowhere for you can be a long, long ways from the terminal itself. I believe you will find that the airport is well over 50 square miles and it is massive compared to many of the others I have flown in and out of both in the USA and abroad.
Overall, the view when coming in to land of the Rocky Mountains is grand. Paying a little extra to fly into that part of the USA is definitely worth it and the help received from staff and even local people from Colorado is worth the extra as well. Enjoy your next trip!
Summary: Beautiful airport, friendly staff, comfortable terminal
