Advantages: flying couldn't be easier
Disadvantages: basic (but sufficient) facilities
I won't hear a bad word said against it. London Luton Airport is the business. Nothing could be more simple. Alright, so its stretching the truth to call it 'London', but the train there from Kings Cross ran like a dream. Station to station in half an hour (£18 return). Or you can catch a coach from Victoria. Then a quick and free bus link to the terminal building five minutes away. No worse or longer than the tube to Heathrow, or train out to Gatwick. Look up tickets and timetables on links from the railtrack or easyjet websites. If you've booked a flight from Heathrow or Gatwick, you get to the airport (hopefully you're in the right terminal) and you're confronted with the world's airlines, battling for your attention. You knew you shouldn't have brought so much luggage, and now you have to drag it to check-in 315, half a mile down the terminal. At Luton, the check-ins do get into double figures, but not by far, and they're all in a line. It would be something of an achievement to get yourself lost. There are enough places to get a bite to eat or a drink, especially if you're about to set off with a 'no frills' airline. You do feel you're on a budget flight, walking across the tarmac to your plane. Will the planes give way to me on this zebra crossing? But for sheer simplicity, Luton can't be beaten.

- 28/09/01 My first experience of Luton this week was enough to stir me up to write an op - which unlike the flight, will be arriving soon! Good op, if a bit no frills! |

- 04/07/01 I flew from Luton for the 6th time last week, and when I arrived at my destination, £250 of sunglasses and aftershanve had been stolen from the bags!
Nice airport, shame about the criminals they employ! |
