Advantages: Easy access, Easy to use, Sensible layout

Disadvantages: Can not fly to all destination

Stansted Airport is 30miles (50k) northeast of central London on the Essex borders; By road take the junction 8 exit off the M11 Good but expensive car parking is available also a park and fly service.

If traveling by rail there are services from London Liverpool Street every 15mins at peak times and every 30mins off-peak (I would advise checking with the rail company if traveling on holidays or very early in the morning), there is also a service via Cambridge.

Stansted started its life as an  USAAF base in 1942 and after the war changed to civil use mostly handling cargo until it was designated as London's third airport in 1979 there followed a very long public enquiry before the go ahead for expansion was given in 1985. The new terminal designed by Foster and Partners opened in 1991 and is in my opinion one of the best airport terminals in the world. The terminal has recently been undergoing further expansion, time will tell if this is as successful.

Stansted now handles over 14 million passengers a year flying to more than 100 destinations with 40 different airlines, all with only one runway. Many of the new low cost airlines use Stansted and are ideal for a  short break on the continent.

The terminal houses all the usual shops, bars and eateries along with banks and car hire firms. There are always taxis available but it is often cheaper to arrange for you local minicab to collect you.
