Advantages: warm welcome, facilities
Disadvantages: appear to be massive, weather in manchester
Manchester Airport formerly known to the 'older' jet set as Ringway has gronw up a matured gracefully, it is of course not without its controversy, more terminal space with the new Terminal 2 (T2), and who could forget the antics of Swampy and his mates trying to stop the building of the new staggered parallel runway 24L/6R with its assortment of additional taxiways and new 2nd airport fire station situated half way down to the south side of the new runway....to add to the confusion, or should I say improvements, the domestic terminal has been taken over by British Airways and its partner airlines and been renamed Terminal 3 (T3) and the former International Terminal is now Terminal 1 (T1)...
Manchester Airport is linked to the whole of the North of England by the UK motorway network via the M56/M60/M62 and also has direct rail services to the new Airport railway station from all over the North of England and of course not forgetting the Bus station served by National Express buses.
Manchester airport and its Airlines also serve most major Cities and Towns within the UK, Ireland & Eurpopean Community through a vast hub of domestic routes.....
Manchester Airport being truly International in status can cope with any sized aircraft, receiving visitors from all over the World on a regular and impromtu basis....many Airlines are applying to begin new routes, in particular to destinations in the USA and Asia..Manchester is also used as a diversionary Airport for all heavy traffic going into London when conditions do not allow for the safe operation of London Airports such as failing weather conditions
All three termnals have their own respective short term parking, in addition to which, there are also long stay parking facilities by terminals 1 & 3, with terminal 2 having its own long term parking facility adjacent to the far end of the terminal close to the cargo area ( it is well sign posted !!), all long stay areas are served by a regular and frequent 24 hour free bus service to and from the arrivals and departure levels..
Apart from the excellent shopping facilities both in the terminals and airside in the duty free areas, there is a wide choice of refreshment areas, seating and waiting areas are extensive, some of the seating may be a little uncomfortable for long waiting, but usually there is enough to go around, if you are departing from Terminal 2 then most people congregate in the central areas, but quite areas can be found at the Northern end of T2 where most folk wont walk down to, also a very nice continental syle coffee bar..if you are disabled there are moving walkways to get you there......and there a re good views over the apron to add to your interest..
There are covered moving walkways between terminals and on site Hotels ( albeit expensive ones !!), the airport is warm and welcoming....with the added bonus of the runways being close to the terminal area there is normally no problem with long taxying, or waiting for take off....
Manchester is an excellent alternative ot the London Airports and no doubt will in the near future be looking for T4 ( Terminal 4) as it continues to expand and cater for even more routes and visitors, it has for the aviation enthusiast an excellent viewing park with shop and snack parking and toilet facilites and superb views over the old and new runways...
Manchester has certainly tried its hardest to cater for all its clients regular or occasional, visiting or flying and can be recommended as a well placed and excellent alternative for a great start to your holiday or business trip to any of the larger UK airports.....

- 27/05/05 I have flown from Manchester a number of times. I hadn't fully appreciated just how complicated it was until I discovered the simplicity of flying from a small regional airport last week: only one terminal, fewer crowds and only a 4 minute walk from departure lounge to gates. :-)
