If you fly into Moscow from abroad then the chances are that you will fly into Sheremetyevo II airport (SVO) (as they call it, whereas Terminal 2, Sheremetyevo Airport would be more correct). I flew in and out of Sheremetyevo on my recent trip to Russia, flying in from Milan with Alitalia. The experience was somewhat different to most airports – as an Australian in the queue as I flew out last night so succinctly put it, "The system here is up the creek and well past the rest room" - he was marginally less impressed than I was. Never land in Moscow after a plane of Koreans! I landed in Sheremtyevo and it was early afternoon on Ladies Day (this is a National Holiday for, you guessed it, Ladies!) Once you get off the plane, you have to go through the dreaded immigration. Oh boy, that is fun! There are five channels for foreigners and two for Russian citizens. Fine, a bit like the UK. Except that for each foreigner, you need documentation, plus visa and this takes between 5 to 10 minutes per person (and for the Koreans, because of the communication difficulty, we are talking 10!) AEROFLOT offer many cheap flights from London to Asia, via Moscow. In the pursuit of a bargain airfare, I have flown through Moscow on Aeroflot several times, and the experience can prove far from user friendly; if you're not prepared for the wait. WAITING FOR CONNECTIONS The Irish Bar and the Heineken Terrace both wait for your dollars at the airport, while you drown away the hours upon hours with further delays mixed in for good measure.
