Advantages: Departure Gate Screens, Cheap flights and variety of destinations
Disadvantages: Price in shops
I attend university in nearby Durham, but live in Ireland. Needless to say I fly semi regularly from this airport and thought I would now let potential future passengers know about its pros and cons.
First and foremost, I will deal with location. Newcastle airport is situated, like most airports, a good distance outside of the city. There is however a fantastic metro system which for £2.90 will take you into Newcastle and give you free reign of the city's metro system for a while. The trains are very regular to accommodate the large number of people coming through the airport. Besides this there are bus links with the city, rent-a-car facilities and enough car parking space for somebody to come and collect you or drop you off.
With regards to the airport itself, it is very modern and has enough facilities to keep you entertained for the duration of your stay. The shopping complex is one of the largest I've seen in an airport of this size, but unfortunately the prices are, despite being duty-free, also amongst the highest. With regards to eating and drinking there is a lot of choice, but this choice is among the usual candidates such as McDonalds and Starbucks. Check in is hassle free and proceeding through security is an undaunting affair. One of the great things about Newcastle airport is that there are screens dotted around the airport telling you when your departure gate will actually open.
There are loads of domestic flights on offer, mostly from easyjet, and various destinations around Europe are available to. These range from the usual Rome and Paris destinations to some surprising destinations such as Poland and Malta.
All in all, any trip through this airport is a pleasant experience. Apart from high prices in all of the shops, there is nothing to fault it on.
Summary: A pleasant experience
