I Always Departed Manchester on an American Flight to Orlando's MCO Airport, I must say that I prefer this airport than the one time that I flew into Sanford, mainly because of the Distance, so if want an airport centrally located then MCO is the best place. Virgin Fly here Direct from Manchester along with many american stopping flights such as Us Air, Delta, continental and american, so you could always pack in a multi stop in either new york or another city.
Back to MCO, I arrive here in the middle of the night around 10pm and you get off the plane into a lovely air conditioned terminal with mickey mouse peering through a shop window just after you have taken a really neat monorail to the main terminal. There was no immigration for me and I collected my bags within 15 minutes of leaving the aircraft.
The Taxi Rank and Rental Car companies are just outside the doors of the baggage area. There is also stands inside showing various hotels with a telephone to ring them. Alot of hotels have a shuttle service and will pick you up for free. We used to get the shuttle to the Days in, Previously howard johnson right next to international house of pancakes. and then get the rental car from the airport in the morning.
Departing MCO is really easy too, as far as the check-in goes. The Security queue in the morning was about 10 minutes until you took your shoes off and shimmied through the metal detectors. I accidently had suncream in my bag and the lady said, "hey is this yours, sorry aint gonna happen baby" she was quite friendly with me. So overall a really good experience.
There's a few shops in the main concourse area with lots of disney world gifts.

Summary: good airport to fly out of
