Truth be told, Galeao airport is not spactacualar- but it isn't bad either. It doesn't have all the crass duty free shops other airports have or the endless nickel and diming.
It is a small airport for a tourist city- which makes things better. There are two small semicircular terminals, which are easy to navigate. If you're on your first trip to Rio, this is an easy introduction to the country. This airport is so efficient, you luggage will usually show up on the conveyor before you do.

However, there are problems. They mostly occur when you're looking for transport into the city. As soon as you come out of Customs, you be swarmed by crooked taxi drivers. Don't talk to them and go straight to the prepaid taxi booth. Also, don't take the municipal buses at night- you'll invariably be mugged. As in all places in South America, WATCH OUT FOR PICKPOCKETS!

When checking in, your luggage will be X-Rayed as you enter the departure hall. This is to prevent drug smuggling. Security checks here are far better and more efficient than in the US- everyone is padded down, but luggage is X-Rayed, not searched. While you're waiting, listen to the sensual voice of the female announcer.

This airport is better than any other in South America.
