Advantages: Loved the Lounges and Duty Free shop

Disadvantages: A little incident with the luggage officer

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport is the only airport on the island of Mauritius- so you might as well guess the constant flurry of activities over there! The Airport was originally called Le Plaisance Airport. With gradual development and the inclusion of new wings and buildings, it was named after Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the Father of the Nation of Mauritius. It is located at the far south east coast of the island- quite a long travel from our hotel!

Like many other buildings in Mauritius, this airport also holds that special homely feel to it. When you enter the large parking lot, the flowered-line driveway takes you straight to the main entrance, where the car can temporarily stop to drop passengers and luggage before finding a parking spot. There are staff to help with the luggage if you need help, but for some reason, tips are not allowed. I liked the ground staff of Mauritius Airport; they seemed young, dynamic and friendly. Moreover, I was particularly impressed by the numerous posters which inform you about everything- from how to check in and out, to protection from viral and tropical diseases.

The inside of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport is divided into three lounges: The Terasse, and the Arrival Premium Lounge, and the VIP Lounge. Like any airport lounge, these two were luxurious and warmly decorated in earthly tones of brown, beige and gold. The VIP lounge is mainly for departing first class passengers. In addition, the lounges offers facilities such as local phone calls which are free of charge, as well as the traditional newspaper and magazine stands.

Services offered by the Airport include Shopping, Counters, Forex, Health Services, Post Office, Vat refund and Lost Baggage. I was really impressed by the shopping facility of the airport (being the shopaholic that I am!). The Duty free shops, as well as various other shops are found both in the check-in, and check-out section of the airport. I also saw a small flower/souvenir shop in one of the lounges.

The Airport moreover holds some restaurants and two food courts where local as well as European delicacies can be tried out. Personally, my friends and I spent more time relaxing in the lounges after a quick tour of the airport. Once again, I must say how impressed I was by the comforting décor of the lounges. I had the impression of being at a particularly nice spa!

The only drawback in my experience with SSR Airport would be at the luggage terminal. One of the officers was quite rude and unhelpful, insisting that I had excess baggage without even looking at my ticket and luggage weight that I was allowed. But I guess rude people are everywhere!

If I had to rate this airport, I would give it 7 on a scale on 10.

Thanks for reading!

Summary: Quite a new and cosy airport

I didn't think the shops were all that good to be honest, certainly nothing that I would have gone for. The food court in departures was nice though, quite pricey!
