Newest Review: ... - it's built on several levels, and immigration inwards is below the outbound concourse. When you disbark, follow the signs to 'immigration' which may be some distance away, dependent on the gate your 'plane stops at. However, they do have lots of those funky moving pavements for ease of passage! I always try to get there quickly, as sometimes there can be a heavy build-up of queues, which if you're stuck at the back can be fairly tedious for the tired, travel-stained tourist. I've hit Suvarnabhumi (pronouced 'suvarnaphoom' I believe) about a dozen times, in and outbound. The place is huge, (as you'd expect from an international flagship airport) and very post-modern in an impersonal kind of way. As has been written elswehere, it's about 15.5 miles (20(ish) Km from Bangkok which can be reached by taxi or bus. A word about taxis - don't get the FIRST one that crowds round you, the 'luxury' yellow ones, they'll charge you THB 1,500 (about £30) when you can walk a few yards to the concourse and get one for about half that amount on the roadside. I recently flew in to and out of this airport in Bangkok and here is my review of it! Location The airport is located quite far away from Bangkok- about 20 miles. However, it is easily reached by taxi or public bus to the transport centre, and then free shuttle bus to the airport. The former costs about seven pounds from the city centre; the latter less than one pound. Design The airport is fairly new and this is easy to deduce from irs design, which is a series of 'tibe' shapes. This gives the feel of space inside the airport. The new Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok is absolutely massive. Be prepared for a very long walk within the terminal if connecting to on going flights or just to get to immigration. There are some moving walkways which are a bit of a help but if you have limited mobility it would be quite a problem. The airport is open bright and airy and there are a wide selection of shops and duty free outlets. There are plenty of eateries around but if you want a bit of peace and quiet before your flight and to sit in comfort try to prebook into one of the lounges which are extremely comfortable. Suvarnabhumi airport opened November 2006 - later than expected. Whilst it hasn't been without it's own reasons for negative publicity ( talk about the runway cracking and cheaper than cheap materials used to lay it) - it is without a doubt an airport which lives up to current expectation. It's an innovative design which proves to be a point of interest and distraction upon arrival. Orientation is not difficult due to clear signposting. Checking in and passport control are equally efficient due to the high number of polite staff. A real high point of the airport are the range of eateries.
