Epson Stylus DX4400
Advantages: price, features
The Epson Stylus printer was bought as an inexpensive solution whilst I was updating my computer equipment. It connects to your computer using a USB cable and does not require any complicated set up. It does not print in fantastically high quality, despite the fact it seems to drink costly ink very very quickly.
This printer by Epson incorporates a scanner and a photocopier into the bargain as well, so although it does look like rather a big unit, you're probably saving a bit of space on your desk.
The scanning software is included and is really easy to use. There are actually instructions just inside the scanner lid, as well as simple on screen windows, so you can't really get stuck. The scanner is of a reasonably high quality, as good as you can expect for a fairly budget machine, but it does take rather a long time and makes an awful lot of noise.
The photocopier function on this printer is also very handy, although because there isn't an option to use a low resolution it drinks ink. I find it cheaper to use the public photocopier in my university library, especially if i have a few copies to make.
The printer did not last me very long because the runners that fed the paper through broke after probably about a year. The paper will only feed at a slightly off centre angle. I first noticed this a long time ago but it was not a problem, it only meant that my printing would be at a very slight angle, however now, one side of the paper always gets chewed up horribly and the same bit of paper gets printed on over and over again. Funnily this problem seems to correct itself sometimes and goes much much worse just when I have something important to print.
Summary: does everything you expect for £40, but nothing more.
