Epson Stylus DX6050
Advantages: Everything is easily accessible and well labelled, plus it prints and scans quickly
Disadvantages: Quite bulky in terms of size
I have spent a long time without a home printer but have recently got into Facebook. I realised there were a number of photos that I had that I wanted to share with people who Iíd met though Facebook, that Iíd known some years ago. The thing was though that I needed a scanner to get them onto the PC. When I saw that PC World had a sale on (was emailed with offers) then I thought Iíd look into what Printers they had. I had a look at a few different brands, compared features, cost of cartridges and settled on this printer, the Epson Stylus DX6050 for about £50. This Printer is a combination of a Printer, Scanner and Copier, it doesnít have a fax function but I have no need for that as I can fax at work if I really need to.
Packaging and setup
It came well packed with the instructions and cartridges easily accessible. There was a lot of tape on it some of which seemed to serve more purpose than other, it was rather sticky so I was careful not to rip anything off that had been purposely held down. The setup was very easy, there was a simple set of clear pictures to follow which cleverly also included things that you shouldnít do in red circles with big diagonal lines through them. The only issue I had was that I didnít press the cartridges in far enough the first time. I liked the fact though that the inner workings were very easy to access just by lifting up the reasonably lightweight scanner/lid.
The software was equally easy to load and once I put the disk in it just went on itís merry way, about half way through you plug the printer in, but not until it tells you.
Probably the section most people these days are interested in. There is the ability to use SD, XD or MS memory cards with this, or printing photos direct from your computer. You can print a Ďnegativesí sheet that shows all your photos on the card on one sheet so you can pick which ones you want to print, this is obviously most useful if your PC is up the swanee or you just donít have one. You can then print away to your hearts content, Iíve not used it much yet but the photos come out good quality as does normal printing. The ink supplied with it is very good and doesnít smear easily like some inks can.
This is the facility I have used the most and scans the photos very well and quickly, about 10-20 seconds per 4*6/5*7 photo depending on which direction you place it on the scanner. Iíve found you need to have the top of the photo against the left hand side of the printer for the photos to come out the right way round. You seem to have to open the scan function on your computer before each photo, not sure why but Iím investigating if this is necessary, but Iíve got the shortcut to it on my desktop so itís easy to get to. There are a few programs that you get with the printer that allow you to amend photos that you upload, such as making old brown photos appear newer, and all the usual stuff like allowing you to change them how you wish.
Iíve not used the copier yet but would imagine there is very little to it, other than putting your document on the scanner and pressing Start.
The printer does seem fairly sizeable for a desk, at 43 cm x 35.4 cm x 18.1 cm itís quite chunky. Thereís a nice little screen that lets you see the pictures you want to print, or gives you details of any faults. All the buttons are well spaced out and each one has a word next to it explaining what it does, except the on/off button which is only labelled as on, I know how this can confuse some people.
All in all itís a good printer sofar that does all I need for my day to day tasks.
Summary: Good printer for a good price, should serve me well
