      Advantages

      Disadvantages

does what it says on the tin

I haven't had many printers so can't really compare it to others so just going on what I think of this particular one. It is a multi printer, so copies and scans to. These options also have the facility of choosing black and white or colour, so no ink is wasted if you only need black and white, but likewise you can copy a document in colour if you need to.

The set up is really easy and straightforward and so are the settings when you are using it. The menus are very clear and it is easy to navigate your way around until you find what you need. Still, their are not too many options, which is good when you need a fairly decent printer for the basics.

The ink dries quickly after printing which is great if you are printing multiple pages, and it is quite fast especially on simple word documents. The other good facility is it allows you to print double sided, waiting for you to turn the page over mid document rather than running ahead.

Copying in scanning are also very good quality, and the basic software for scanning is good for what it is. You can select document type, quality of the scan, and a few extra options, eg colour restoration or dust removal for old photos.

The only thing I would warn about though is that it isn't very good for printing photos. The print head needs to be cleaned regularly otherwise phots end up with lines through them. And as the ink is quite heavy, every photo paper I have used hasn't worked as it just goes really dark.

The other main draw back is the price of ink. Although the printer is decent, it is annoying when ink costs £40 a pop for the four different colours. Although at least you change each colour when it runs out, so nothing is wasted, rather than changing the whole block.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      overall - recommended

The Epson Stylus DX8400 is an all in one printer, scanner and photocopier which I have had for a couple of years I think. It's currently available for about £100 on the Epson website.

It was quite quick and easy to set up - there was some software with it to be installed but there were instructions, and nothing went wrong!

The printer can print directly from an XD, SD or MS card, without a PC - I have never used this function.

The print quality is good and sharp, even on lower settings (except for the draft setting). I have only printed photos a couple of times - the quality was great but it did use up a lot of ink.

The printer comes with a black cartridge and 3 colour cartridges which means you only need to change the colour cartridges that are empty. I have found that the cartridges don't last very long and the printer does not print (not even black and white on the lowest quality setting :(...) if any one colour runs out. This can be really frustrating. The cartridges are available on Amazon, usually a pack of all 4 colours costs between about £25-40. I would recommend using the genuine Epson cartridges as using not doing so invalidates the warranty, and I have also found that they can be quite dodgy (e.g not working at all or not lasting very long, or drying up). One annoying thing is that if you don't use the printer for a while, then try to print something, the ink dries up an you have to buy new ink for the printer to print.

The machine is quite sleek looking and attractive with a glossy grey top and matte gray sides. The top has buttons that are easily accessible and clearly marked. There is a display screen that can be lifted upright.

I like the copier function as you can photocopy pages when the PC is off. It is very slow though - even in black and white (you can do colour photocopies too)

The scanner function is good too - there is no scan button; instead, scanner controls come up on your pc. Once you have scanned, there are lots of extra options. There is a preview mode, which I find really useful.

The printer is quite noisy and a little bulky but I have never had problems with it.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Capable.

Epson DX8400. All-in-one printer, scanner and copier. Some people believe that all-in-ones must have inferior capabilities - not so.

The machine is reasonably attractive - glossy grey upper surfaces and matt grey sides. Controls are all easily accessible and clearly marked on the left with a small display screen that can be lifted upright.

The copier function gives good copies. Increase the darkness a touch for nicer copies. The settings for copying can take a little getting used to. Straightforward once you've completely mastered it.

The scanner function is fantastic for the price - as I do a lot of graphic work and graphics with text. One of the reasons I bought this printer as it is known for this ability. The scanner controls that come up on your pc (epson scan) are pretty much to professional standard and not too long ago would only have been available on very expensive kit. Of course, the output is only as good as your printer.
(Does not scan transparencies or print on transperent sheets.)
Fiddling about with all the scanner functions can over complicate things and its best to keep it simple and you can get excellent results without resorting to the advanced functions - though set it to scan in 'professional mode'. preview function is really good.

Printing function - prints photos well 9 some can get a little on the dark side), prints graphics well, as always depends on quality of your original and the papers used. But good graphic prints can be obtained on very basic paper. I often put in high quality artists cartridge paper for prints (wipe off any glue residue first).
Prints very well without having to use the highest quality setting.
Can be used as a stand alone printer - but I have never used this function.

Inks are durabrite high quality epson inks (a set included with a new printer). These are claimed to be waterproof - but in reality just take a little longer to succumb to water than other inks.
They don't last as long as I'd like. But I've had a lot worse.

Easy-ish to initially set up and get running.
      5760x1440 print resolution.
1200x2400 scanning resolution (you won't need all this)

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A good quality and reliable printer from a well known brand. I would recommend this to anyone.

I have had this printer for over a year and purchased it from my local supermarket for a very reasonable price. It is an all in one printer, i.e. it prints, scans and photocopies. All of the software needed for scanning comes with the printer and is straight forward and easy to use. The printer performs well as a black and white copier, but for more colours and greater sharpness it is best to use the scanning function. The printer also has the facility to print directly from an XD, SD or MS card, without the need of a PC although I have never used this as I do not have the need for it. I have printed out many documents containing both text and pictures and have been pleased with the results (I did not even set up the printer to the highest quality). The printer comes with a black cartridge and 3 colour cartridges which saves money as you only need to change the colour cartridges that are empty rather than changing all three just because one colour has run out. Unfortunatley the cartridges do not last very long as they are small, however high capacity ink cartridges are available from Epson and other compatible cartridges.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      cheap and useful

      Epson Stylus DX8400

This is a cheap version printer from Amazon. It is selling for £56 at Amazon. I bought it one month ago.

I am very pleased with this printer. It is all in one printer that means it copies print and scan documents.

The quality of print has vastly improved from years gone by. Last one I bought was three years ago and that wasn't that good.

This printer prints good quality text and it prints good quality photos.

Read this spec before buying from Amazon.
The information comes from that site too.

Inks are individual so save money. Ink used in this printer is waterproof. Amazon is selling it for only £10.99. Quality original Epson ink.

The additional feature of this printer is it has a big lcd screen. This lets user print without the computer.

With all these features where you can print, photocopy scan and use it without pc. It is recommended by me because it only costs £56 with free delivery.

Two things to worry about. The printer is slightly noisy and it requires all the ink cartridges present to print even black and white text.

Overall a great printer providing lots of separate features and still keeping print quality high.

        Full review
This is one of the best multi-function printers I have used even if a bit pricey at £100 and missing some of the advanced features available from other manufacturers such as Wi-Fi printing it still provides stunning quality prints.
The device contains a 2.5" lcd screen for direct printing from memory card with slots available on the front for a whole range of cards. This is great for printing photos quickly and easily.
I had the printer set-up and installed in under 10 minutes with an easy to use usb plug that was recognised by plug and play in vista. Although I didn't try Epson's software although when I have owned Epson's before I have never had any problems with their software.
At a decent readable text level the printer can churn out about 4 pages per minute, although this isn't as fast as a laser printer this printer was designed for creating quality photo prints and an easy to use scanner, not as a commercial black and white printer.
The quality of photo prints is very good on the Epson providing a 5760 x 1440 dpi resolution that should surfice a4 prints, although most pictures are bright and vibrant any photos taken in the dark seem to come out very dark on this printer.
Overall a great printer providing lots of separate features and still keeping print quality high.
