Advantages: Cheap, Easy to set up. Good software included
Disadvantages: Cartridges are quite small. Not great quality printing photographs
As we have a desktop PC set up in the small spare bedroom in our house, you can imagine that space is at a premium. So when I saw that Epson had a printer/scanner/copier on the market at a knockdown price of £21.99 in PC world, I thought that I would take a chance on the Epson Stylus SX105.
Now usually I am pretty wary of offers that appear too good to be true - however on this occasion I have always found Epson to be a good quality brand, and the size of the device as follows - height 179 mm, width 450 mm, depth 340 mm, which fitted into the gap on my computer desk perfectly.
Now the third requirement for me after price and size was the cost of replacement ink cartridges. I know from listening to other people's experiences that a seemingly cheap printer can be blown out of the water by needing a new mortgage just to buy replacement ink. However I found the cartridges to be comparable with the other printers available - the cost being £6.16 for the black and £17.60 for a pack of the three colour cartridges. It may also be possible to get these even cheaper in a supermarket buying own brand ink. I also liked the fact that the 3 colour cartridges were separate, as there is nothing more annoying than having to fork out for a new colour cartridge just because you have printed one document in yellow (not the best example but hey you get the idea!!!)
The machine itself has the following features, all taken from the paperwork that comes in the box: -
Maximum print resolution - 5760 x 1440 dpi
Normal print speed - 26ppm b&w/14ppm colour
Standalone copying - Yes
Number of cartridges - 4 Individual
Connectivity - USB 2.0
Borderless printing - Up to A4
Direct printing - No
Monitor - No
Copier features - Auto fit reduction/enlarge
A couple of things to point out here is that although the device will photocopy without being connected to a PC which doesn't affect me as it is a desktop PC, but those of you with laptops might find this a bonus. Secondly there is no card reader, so you can't connect your digital cameras up straight to it and print. Again not a big issue for me but it may affect some of you.
On getting the device home, I opened the box and found it to be packaged up very securely with lots of polystyrene and tape holding it firmly in place, which is always reassuring!!! There is an instruction leaflet that also comes with it, which is very clear, but to be honest, it is very simple to set this printer up. Simply plug the device into the mains, and the USB connection into the back of the PC and you are ready to rock and roll. The software is also included and once this is installed, it is very easy to put your ink cartridges in - the software is actually a big plus here as it basically walks you through replacing ink cartridges, nozzle cleaning and other basic maintenance. Another little bonus here is that when working inside the printer, there is a handy little stand that holds the lid up so it is less fiddly. The paper feed is from the back, and I have had no problems with this, it is a smooth motion, and the back folds over to make it look tidier when not in use.
The print quality I would describe as adequate. For everyday document printing, copying and scanning, the SX105 works pretty well with no issues. It is not the quickest printer in the world, but for the price tag, I have few complaints. I wouldn't recommend this printer to people who print a lot of photographs as the quality just isn't there for the high resolution stuff, and the colour cartridges are quite small and do empty pretty quickly if hardcore colour printing is taking place. Apart from that I think the SX105 does a decent job of being a budget multi-purpose device and would recommend it.

Summary: Good option for people on a budget as a home printer, but not if printing photos.
