Epson Stylus SX415
Advantages: Cheap price, lots of functions including card reader
Disadvantages: Best for those who don't use the printer/copier a lot
This review is for the Epson SX415 inkjet colour printer, scanner and copier, making it a multi function machine.
There is a newer version of this printer that's available, the Epson SX425, but this has the advantage that the price of this particular model is falling and can be obtained at a very good value price.
In terms of printing, I found this printer to be effective and quick to use. It doesn't take up too much space on the table, around 35 cms wide and 18 cms deep. It was quick and easy to connect and I also found it printed at a tolerable noise, as some printers I've had before can be quite loud during the printing process, although the process of taking the paper into the printer can be a little loud.
One of the advantages of this printer is that you can purchase the various colour ink cartridges individually, rather than just throw the lot away when one colour has run out. It does though mean you have to remember to have four different colour ink cartridges available, the black cartridge, and the three colour cartridges.
It's a little difficult to compare effectively, but I was impressed with how long the print cartridges lasted, so they seemed to be reasonable value. I always buy original cartridges when I replace them which is a more costly way of doing it, but you can get unofficial cartridges from other manufacturers if you prefer.
The scanning process I found to be a little time-consuming, and I wouldn't have wanted to have had to do too many documents. However, for an occasional process, it's entirely adequate, and the quality was as I had expected. In a similar way, the photocopy element is fine for a few documents, a little too time-consuming for more.
A handy extra feature with this printer is the card slot, so you can put your memory card straight into the printer and it will print the photos without having to download them via your computer. There is a little screen on the side of the printer which lets you choose which images you want to print. This is a really handy feature, especially for me as I've finally discovered memory cards recently, having managed to have never used them before!
As a note, this printer doesn't come with a USB cable (unless the retailer bundles one with the printer) so you will need to either check that you have one of these available, or purchase one when you buy the printer. It does though come with a CD-ROM, although I didn't need to use this as the computer found the printer easily and I didn't feel the need to install any specific software to use the printer.
The recommended retail price for the printer is 119.99 pounds, but is available for much less than this from most retailers. The printer currently retails for 59.99 pounds in Argos if you want it quickly, but is cheaper from Amazon which at the time of writing charges 48.97 pounds including free postage. You may be able to get a second hand one a little cheaper from sites such as eBay and Amazon.
In summary, this is a perfectly competent printer. The machine quality build isn't superb, but for the money, there are a lot of functions and it fulfils the requirements that the average user is likely to expect from it. It prints quickly, and for a low cost, and the extra features of the scanner and copier are really handy to have. I must admit though, I still find it amazing how cheap technology has become, long may it continue!
Summary: Definitely worth a look for under 50 pounds
