Epson Stylus SX415
Advantages: Multi-function, Compact, Ease of use.
Disadvantages: Not the best quality prints, scans can lack definition.
During my time at University studying photography I found that I was spending tonnes on printing my images and essays either in the University library or worse, giving my money to Supermarket photo departments for them to give me a print out that barely resembled what I had sent for printing.
I decided it was time to invest in a printer that I could have at home and would allow me to control the way the images were coming out as well as being able to print out my essays myself. Allowing me to print out at 3am before a deadline when needs be!
After looking at stand alone printers from Epson I noticed this little gem with it's multi functionality and was very tempted indeed. It would allow me to scan in polaroids I had taken and edit them in Photoshop and also I thought the copy function it offers would be great for quickly printing off a page from a book that I had borrowed from the library and would be able to highlight and make notes on my print out.
I was happy with the size of this printer, it measures around 17 inches wide by 13 inches deep and is 6 inches high. This made it very easy to pop on the bottom of my computer desk next to the tower. The paper loading tray folds down flat to allow you to save enough more space when not in use. And the print out tray does the same. Perfect!
So, the make or break moment for printers is the ink.. now, as far as I remember this item came with a full set of inks to use when I bought it but you'd have to check this with the supplier.. So was of no cost to me to buy the first set. But when it came time to re-fill the ink supplies I was pleasantly surprised to find that ink on amazon was around £36.99 for a set of yellow, magenta, cyan and one black. But, if you're trying to look after the pennies like I was, you can get compatible inks for 4 sets for £8.99.. and they work really well!
Overall if you were looking for a high-end fast and quiet printer I'd say you'd probably be best looking for a higher-priced stand alone printer rather than this one as it seems to lose a few points on print quality but it makes up for itself with it's multi-functions in my book.
It's extremely easy to use and the ink lasts for a fair amount of time compared to others I have spoken to and it works well even after standing unused for a while where as previous printers I've had allow the inks to dry up and you get banding on your printouts and then waste ink cleaning the heads.
If you need a jack of all trades and are not expecting too much from something designed to do the basics of each functions, I'd say you'd be very well suited to this printer.
Summary: Jack of all trades and adequate at most. Buy if you're looking for a basic all-in-one machine.
