Advantages: They work on a wide spectrum of allergies.
Disadvantages: May cause drowsiness.
Because Piriton tablets, just like allergies, are not just for when the news carries hay fever warnings. For all too many of us it is a year long problem to be managed.
I am packing these in my Christmas luggage as I am allergic to cats and my brother has two very adorable but very furry allergy triggers who love me very much. I pack these in my holiday medical kit as I have horribly bad reactions to mosquito bites. Seriously, if I do not take these for the inside and slather on hydrocortisone cream on the bite itself I will ulcerate and scar. I not only get tree pollen allergies and find it impossible to mow grass - which is why I live in a flat with no garden - but I am allergic to moulds.
With the weather having gone insane and flooding all too common I have been feeling the eye itch and sniffles which happen to me when there is mould in the air. I am sure I am not the only one. My asthma meds keep me breathing and, well, alive, but they are not so good at dealing with the eye and nose issues triggered by autumn and wet winter moulds.
So I buy these.
There are more modern meds available and many of those are also available over the counter at a Boots or major supermarket near me and you. So why do I buy Piriton?
They have stopped me ulcerating and scarring in rainforests where I got chomped on by clouds of mozzies. I take these and my eyes don't itch or fingers tingle when my brother's cats come and sit on my lap (as cats do to many of us who are allergic) for a good long stroke. I can go to a barbeque in friends gardens and not look like I am crying. They let me stop off in the forest on the way to my parents and get fresh air without paying for it.
Some people will experience sleepiness with these. It is not something I have had a problem with - possibly due to my caffeine addiction and base levels of the latter in my bloodstream. Those who do experience sleepiness should obviously not drive or operate heavy machinery when taking these. But for me, they help my driving in high allergy areas as I am neither sneezing nor suffering from runny eyes.
It works as the active ingredient Chlorphenamine blocks the histamine H1 receptors which are the culprits in allergic reactions. Because it is this broad blocker it does cover the whole spectrum of allergic reactions and is so useful in so many situations.
Though asthmatics are included with the elderly, children under six, epileptics, high blood pressure sufferers who should use with caution, this asthmatic depends on these little pills to make life better and has not suffered from side effects.
The main side effects is sleepiness, though dizziness and nausea are also included in the list of side-effects.
As with any medical product, always read the warning leaflet and discuss with your doctor, especially if you are taking any medications it may counter-indicate with.
After doing that those with allergies or family members who suffer will benefit from heading to Boots and picking up a box of these miracle workers. A 30 pill box will cost £3.59 or 359 Advantage points. The 60 pill box is not cheap at £6.39 or 639 points, but is worth it, especially for longer holidays in mozzie biting areas as it works and saves you the horrors of trying to find something which will bring down an allergic reaction in a foreign language pharmacy.
As it is, one of these little pills are easily swallowable and provides welcome relief within thirty minutes and lasts for four to six hours.
All year round and everywhere.
Which is why they are a staple of my medicine cabinet and why I am reviewing this now as I know I will not be the only allergic facing mould, cats and holiday mozzie bites this Christmas and so in need of knowing what works for fellow sufferers.
And the carboard box and warning leaflet are even recyclable for that virtuous green feeling.
Summary: An effective and reliable allergy treatment for all year round.
