The console war is starting to heat up again, and maybe its time to start to look at the ups and downs each console has to offer, so here goes nothing! 1. Sega Dreamcast Ups This is a machine thats been out for a while now and from what I've seen of it - its very good offering what every console games player ever wanted, a chance to play games online as well as an opportunity for net access along with a price that doesn't really sting the pocket its easy to pick one of these up for about 145 pounds at the moment, it sounds a lot but when you see the prices the other machines I'm reviewing are on sale for then you'll see what I mean. Downs Not only is the fact that the machine has been out for a while a good attribute for the machine but its also a bad one as well - why? because when the undoubted Christmas sales war between this console and the PS2 breaks out a lot of people already own a Dreamcast so it'll get left behind and claimed as a failure against the PS2 so developers are going to start to work on the PS2 again. Games to mention: Virtual Tennis (when it works), Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio ** Update on Dreamcast ** I have just come back from collecting my own Dreamcast and saw that it was possible to buy a Dreamcast with copies of ChuChu Rocket, Sega Bass Fishing, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Crazy Taxi for under £190, in my ever so humble opinion I have to say that this is an absolute bargain. Playstation 2 Ups This is the machine to beat - it already has a huge fan-base and a lot of major developers have announced titles for it, this along with a DVD drive and room for expansion makes it a force to be reckoned with before it even hits the shops, and with some great titles coming along its going to be hard to beat, add all this to the fact that there are 50 promised games on the release date and it looks like it might be a good o
ne. Downs Sequels - all of the titles I'm going to mention below are sequels, now theres nothing wrong with a sequel if its done in the right way but I think some of us are starting to get annoyed with all the latest offerings having to have a number next to it (i.e. Tomb Raider 4, Crash Bandicoot 3, Tekken 3 and so forth), plus one of the places I believe Sony have failed big time is the ordering system - pre-ordering isn't the way to go to sell a new console because as much as people deny it when it comes to Christmas, parents are going to go into their local games store, ask which console is the best and be told thats its the PS2 before being told that they can't have one because they didn't pre-order. All of this on top of a price 0f £299 with NO games to play on it makes it a hefty price indeed. Games Tekken Tag Tournament, GT2000, Metal Gear Solid 2 X-Box Ups This is a hard one to review as very little has been shown of the console except the rolling demo of the robot and just to watch that was enough to stun the gaming-world, believe me it was good! But on top of this look at the company who makes it - Microsoft, yes its the company we all love to hate, but when they get it right we all stand up and take notice, I mean how many of you are using Windows as your operating system right now? - exactly. Downs Same as the ups, its by Microsoft yes they are good when they get it right but when they get it wrong it isn't usually on a small scale they usually cock-up big time. The only othr thing I can say is this is Microsofts first entry into the console ring and Bill Gates has got to realise that the console market is a world away from the PC market. Price ???? Games ????????? Nintendo Dolphin (now known as Gamecube) I have to mention this one because I know that Nintendo are putting a lot of work into this machine, but to be hon
est I know even less about this machine than I do about the X-Box so I can't offer a fair judgement on the machine - when I know more I promise to come back and update the review. PSOne Ups Hardly anything can be classed as an up for this, except for the gigantic games catalogue it has and the fact that its portable. Downs This is an obvious cash-in, no different from the little grey box a lot of us have already and no cheaper either, god only knows why this has come out. Price 89.99 Games Take your Pick - Resident Evil 3, Silent Hill, Fifa series etc. Well there you have it, all that can be said for certain at the minute is the fact that its going to be a hellacious war between Sony and Sega again and this time I'm not going to sit on the fence, my Dreamcast is on its way and I'm saving my Dooyoo Miles up to knock a bit of the price of the PS2, Happy Gaming!

Julz2021 - 26/01/01 on points 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8) all I really care about is that PS2 is now the future along with the X-Box, Sega and Nintendo are not the only people making games consoles anymore, and in MY books they are not the best. N64's are and have always been bollox and Dreamcasts are just Saturns on drugs that done well due to the very good games that have come out |
