Advantages: Downfall of high prices!
Disadvantages: Too many good consoles, to choose from.
The war is about to begin! For a long time the gaming industry has been waiting for the war to start! Why? Because with the war will come the reduction in price. Although the PS2's new release was greeted by stores everywhere being flooded by adults and children alike requesting this extremely sought after console, there are other consoles out there and some that you should hold your money for! The Dreamcast - Currently the only console to offer online gaming, as well as web access, e-mail and also MP3 downloads (March this year!). This is the main thing Sony has over it's rivals and will probably remain this way for quite a while. The Dreamcast's built-in modem isn't exactly the Ferrari class, or not quite Audi TT, but it's plenty adequate for races, real-time strategy battles and online Quake bloodbaths. America's January will brighten up with user's hooking up to broadband Internet servers. Expect Britain to follow suit come summertime. Many things are planned, and some already in action, so keep an eye out for future developments. Playstation 2 - Contrasting to the Dreamcast, the Playstation 2 isn't net-ready when it comes out of the box. However, Sony have managed to come up with a good reason for this exclusion - conventional modems 'aren't good enough' for UK PS2's, so the company is working on a box that will provide hard-drive functions as well as a broadband connection facility. Unfortunately this isn't likely to appear until around about autumn. An excellent feature that the PS2 boasts is it's audio capacity, with a Logic 3 Sound System, it will mean that the console will be an ideal MP3 player, and will enhance your gaming experience to unknown regions. Although these two beasts are now in the public pipeline, there is more to come, from the likes of Nintendo and Microsoft. From Microsoft will come the Xbox and from Nintendo will come Game Cube
(previously referred to as the Dolphin). At the moment I’m gonna be waiting for both of these to come out, but mainly the Xbox. It's faster, slicker and is gonna have a lot of accessories and games brought out with it's launch. Game Cube - The first non-cartridge console from Nintendo, a wise move me thinks! The games for the Game Cube will be on funny-sized DVD's. Nintendo has also stuck it's neck out by making the Game Cube a games-only machine, compared to the bells-and-whistles, one-stop home entertainment approach of its PS2 and Xbox rivals. Early demos indicate that Game Cube is going to be capable of producing incredibly smooth, solid characters and lifelike animation - probably more than that seen from the PS2 and Xbox, which when you think about it is quite an impressive feat from Nintendo. Although the machine is going to be a games-only machine it's still worth considering if that’s all you want. Xbox - Unlike the Game Cube and the PS2, the Xbox includes a hard drive and broadband(faster internet connnection!)as standard. It's also got a full DVD player that will make the one in the Playstation 2 look like a cheapo knock-off. Processing wise, it's a Goliath of a console, leaving behind the PS2 in a fiery wake. The CPU within the Xbox is double the power of those in the PS2 and the Game Cube, and the graphics processor is about three times faster than current NVidia PC graphics chips. The Xbox is going to offer a number of titles which will work entirely online, and the Xbox's spacious hard drive should allow the storage of massive amounts of information on characters and continuing games, along with downloads of additional levels or upgrades for the games. Expect the Xbox to lead the way in terms of online gaming, being as Microsoft is already running several very slick online gaming communities. Out of all of the consoles, my opinion is definitely leaning towards the
Xbox, out of all the magazines I have read over the past few months the Xbox seems to be the top recommendation in every single one of them. Although if your seriously desperate to get your hands on a new piece of hardware then it has to be the PS2. If your willing to wait then the Xbox is an ideal all-rounder, and with the essential stuff included it could be the cheaper option in the long run. But until the Xbox comes out your either going to have to hang on to your ever out-dating system or dish out for one of the current systems. I hope I have given you enough info to try and make a decision for yourself... happy P.S Sorry i haven't got the dates of release, there have been to many different dates that i thought i'd leave it!

BartonFink - 29/01/01 Excellent review, interesting times ahead in the console market. Like you I think the XBox will be the one that will emerge as the best one on the block. |
