I’ll cut straight to the chase: The video games industry is going down the pits. In one chair we have the Dreamcast, a powerful console, cheap price, hundreds of top quality games yet its now dieing. On the other we have the PC games market. A few years ago PC games were the best in the business, full of original ideas and gorgeous graphics but now that’s declining too. But why is that happening I hear you ask? Well I point the finger of blame squarely on Sony and it’s casual gamer entourage. Sony has done a lot for the industry, but with the good come the bad, with the slap on the back comes the slap to the face, and here’s why. When the Playstation was launched I remember thinking that it looked pretty rubbish. I’d just bought a new PC. I was enjoying wonderful graphics and enjoyable, original games whilst the Playstation gamers were playing on their Crash Bandicoot and Tomb Raider. However I noticed a growing trend, more and more PC games were being ported across. I spat on the floor in disgust when I walked into my local games shop and saw Red Alert for that console… casual gamers swarmed around it like vultures. This was the biggest game of my life, I had devoted hundreds of hours to playing it and learning strategies, then along come the Playstation hoards and now it was no longer mine!! :( Back to today, I acquired a Dreamcast for Christmas – wonderful console. But now I hear Sega aren’t producing it anymore, and all these excellent games are getting canned… but why? I mean, the only other console around is the Playstation2, but that has no decent games and costs £300… surely people wouldn’t buy that over the £150 (now £100) Dreamcast? Surely not?? Oh how wrong was I. Yet again the masses have ruined yet another good thing. I’m not saying that the PS2 is an awful console. What I’m saying is that I think it’s a great shame t
hat the sheep of this country will choose brand name over quality. An awful shame. One which has led to the demise of my favourite console. So now that the Dreamcast is dead and the PC market is headed that way, what do we have to look forward too? I’ll tell you, unoriginal, boring sequels. Going into a games shops and seeing little kids who don’t know the first thing about gaming going on about how decent the next Tomb Raider game is. It’s become to bad, the other day I was mocked for picking up a copy of MSR on the Dreamcast but some PS2 zealots… this is the games industry now, and this is what the sheep have created. I hope that everyone’s happy. Our only salvation lies in the new consoles, the Gameboy Advance with it’s old skool gaming, the Xbox which should boost the PC games market, and the Gamecube which…err well we’ll see :) Please direct all flames to the comments box just below here :) Thanks for reading.

mavis_riley - 16/01/02 The title of this op intrigued me. You make some valid points, but you make no valid arguments for dismissing the Playstation. It was the most powerful console of the time and should not be put in the same bracket as a PC. And what about the catalogue of good games available for PS? |
