Advantages: Totally original

Disadvantages: Too hard

Ghouls n Ghosts, I bought this game for every computer I had. I had it for the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC and the Amiga. Strangely enough, I never once found this game boring.

In the game, you play a knight called Arthur, who has to rescue a princess and destroy a demon. The game is modelled on a very simple idea, but it provided you with lots of fun.

You have to progress through five sideway-scrolling levels, which become increasingly difficult. Don't think for one minute that this game is easy, it isn't it's extremely hard. You need to possess quick reactions to progress in this game.

Your enemies are really cool, especially the ones on the first level, which consist of Zombies rising from the grave, and these funny little pig like creatures with spears.

There was also treasure chests scattered throughout the levels, which would give you power-ups, there was a chest that released a magician, and he would turn you into a duck. How original is that? The power-ups would also provide you with special armour, and if you held down the fire button, you would get a super weapon that could blast away the Zombies.

When you reached the end of a level you would find yourself up against a super-baddie, and believe me, they were hard to kill. Considering they were five times bigger than poor old Arthur was.

You started the game with three lives; this game was so hard that you could lose all three lives, after a few seconds, which made it hard to progress in the game. The highest level I reached was level four, which I think is quite an achievement.

The music that goes with this game is stunning, it was written by Tim Follin. The music has a medieval feel to it that adds to the atmosphere of the game.

The graphics were great, which made the game flow along at a nice speed, I wouldn't go as far as to say there were great on the Amiga, but they matched the arcade version.
The only criticism
I have is that it was too hard, and there should have been more levels, starting simple then getting increasingly more difficult.

If you had an Amiga or Spectrum and you didn't play Ghouls n Ghosts, you've definitely missed out.

This was a true classic.
