Advantages: Guns, shooting, aliens, explosions
Disadvantages: Graphics dated by todays standards
Half life is one of the best next generation first person shooter games that I have played on the PC. This was the beginning for some of the best 3D games we have around today, and the reason why it was so amazing is the superb graphics combined with the awesome story. The 3DFX graphics give areal sense of perspective and the graphical effects for things such as water and sky were groundbreaking at the time of release.
The story is what really clinched it for me though. You take control of Gordon Freeman who is a scientist, and after an experiment goes wrong and creatures from another dimension start appearing you have to fight your way out. The non player characters in the game are great for interaction, other scientists and guards are walking about the play area and you can converse with them before firing a shot at them, then find them cowering in a corner. Some of the braver ones have a pop back at you, its just fun interacting with the computer generated characters.
The weapons you pick up are superb, from basic machine guns to explosive rocket launchers. The game reminds me of Blake Stone which was released in the early 90s by apogee. I think that influences have been taken from here and I can also see that Halo has been influenced by Half life.
The control system is easy enough, with a combination of mouse and keyboard.
There are loads of mods and add ons that you can getfor Half Life, such as opposing force and Blue Shift which give different perspectives on the gameplay. There are also hundreds of patches on the internet for different skins, guns and levels. It was only a few years ago that I last played this online and there were still loads of games going on.
This is a really good first person shooter and has loads of life leftin it despite the graphics now being a little dated.
Half life is awesome.
Full stop
