Advantages: addictive by its simplicity
Disadvantages: .
I had forgotten all about this game until I read about it right here on Dooyoo. Ikari Warriors was a model of what made the old games great despite the lack of resources. It combined addictive gameplay with pure simplicity to make it one of the best games of its time. Ikari Warriors was a direct conversion of the coin-op by the same name. The loose story behind the mayhem is that you are a pilot, shot down in enemy territory who must fight his way through numerous enemy territories to reach safety. It can be played in either 1 player or 2 player modes(I guess the other bloke is the navigator or something) but the objective is still the same. Basically, you start out with 5(or was it 6?) lives and must make your way through the various levels, facing overwhelming enemy odds in order to reach sanctuary. You are armed with grenades and a measly machine gun in your quest, but can also hijack tanks as well - although they tend to run out of fuel and explode rather dangerously. You must face enemy soldiers, gun posts, bunkers, helicopter gunships and tanks in your quest to reach the end of this upward scrolling shoot-em up. The idea is brilliant in its simplicity and what is even better is that, if you can stand the cr*ppy graphics, the games is free to download from the spectrum games archive(http://www.spectrumarchive.freeserve.co.uk /...as is a spectrum emulator so that you can play it). I haven't yet found an Amiga emulator on the net which is a shame but I'm still looking...but for the moment the speccy emulator will give you a taste of the game and what makes it great. I suggest taht if you are into retro gaming, fancy a bit of nostalgia or simply are looking for a decent free game from the net then you seriously consider checing this one out. Trust me, its one of the better shoot-em ups from the 8-bit days.
