Advantages: Addictive, great graphics.

Disadvantages: Levels are reasonably hard from the third level!

After some more evenings spent playing on my old Mega Drive I have decided to review another of the games. On this occasion I will be reviewing Mickey Mania.
Please Note the format I am reviewing is the Megadrive, although Dooyoo have placed all Megadrive games in the Amiga games section.

*** Mickey Mania ***

Mickey Mania starring Mickey Mouse was released on the Sega Mega Drive back in 1994.

I remember buying this game when I was about 12 or 13 for the simple reason of how much I enjoyed two other Disney-Sega games that I have already reviewed: Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion.

The aim of the game is to work your way through Mickey Mouse's career through a series of levels based on a wide selection of the films that Mickey has starred in. Along your adventure you will of course come across the usual selection of enemies and end of level bosses, so lets get on with playing the game...

Upon inserting the game and going through the various start up screens you will come to the main menu where you simply press start to start the game on the 1928 Steam Boat Willie level/film. At the start of this level you will be playing in black and white, due to the film being released in black and white at the start of Mickey's career. As you work your way through the level you will almost meet Steamboat Willie, however just as you approach him he looks terrified of something and runs away, upon continuing through the level and eventually reaching the end about 3 screens later and having gone from playing in black and white to full colour, you have to defeat 2 cranes which repeatedly drop bombs and the occasional spring to jump on whilst avoiding the bombs, defeating the cranes is relatively simple as it is a case of jumping on the lower cogs and then throwing your ammo at the higher ones whilst bouncing on the mentioned springs, after defeating the cranes you will see Steamboat Willie and a message will come up congratulating you on rescuing him. This is the case on the following levels; you work your way through them to rescue your friends or the characters from whichever film the level is based on. The second level is The Mad Doctor, in this level you work your way through The Mad Doctors house defeating random skeletons and bats along your way, at the end you must defeat the Mad Doctor himself as he throws bottles of chemicals at you, if you succeed then you rescue Pluto and move to the next level and the game continues.

There are 7 levels in total, which may not seem a lot, however due to the length of them and the increasing difficulty of the levels I have not yet managed to finish the game! The levels are:

Steamboat Willie (1928)
The Mad Doctor (1933)
The Band Concert (1935)
Moose Hunters (1937)
Lonesome Ghosts (1937)
Mickey and the Beanstalk (1947)
The Prince and the Pauper (1990)

I have found the controls of the game to be fairly simple, with the directional pad to move Mickey around and a jump button and a button for throwing your ammo to kill your enemies.

Ammo for defeating your enemies is randomly placed around the levels and you must collect this as you go, this is the easiest way to defeat an enemy as you do not have to get up close and risk being hurt, however a few enemies, but not all can be defeated by jumping on them.

The game is full of the usual fantastic Disney graphics and lots of colour, making it an enjoyable game to play. I think that the idea of the levels being based on Mickey Mouse's films is great and very original, however I would have like to have seen a few more films included as I am sure Mickey has been in more than 7, and the date gaps between the featured films does seem to jump quite an amount from his 1947 Mickey and the Beanstalk right up to 1990 The Price and the Pauper.

The music and sound effects in the game are of a reasonable level, the music is based on the music from the relevant films and the sound effects are minimal but at the same time relevent to the game.

After years of playing the game I still find the levels to be rather challenging, especially after the second level. I think the first level is a great introduction to the game and good for getting used to the controls and the way the game works, however from the second level on you do have to be really on the ball and quick to react to things, it is good fun and challenging though!

*** Do I Recommend Mickey Mania? ***

Yes I would recommend this game, I have found it to be really enjoyable to play, mainly due to the fact that I still cant finish it so it keeps me coming back for more! I also enjoy the amount of colour and great graphics that seem to help make the game play nice and smooth. The game is great for children, however I think they might find levels after the second slightly harder and defiantly more challenging, so this maybe one for the older children. Overall a challenging but very playable game.

*** Availability ***

I think finding this game in your local high street shops will be virtually impossible, however I'm sure eBay will have the odd copy going on there.

Thanks for reading! Lou.x

Summary: A fantastic but challenging Mickey Mouse game!
