Advantages: Cheap games and console, retro feel.
Disadvantages: Dated compared to other consoles.
The Playstation One was the beginning of Sony's reign over the console market.
The graphics and sound of the games are very limited by today's standards, and the gameplay will also feel dated. This console has long seen it's tenth birthday, and isn't really holding up that well in appearances. I still have my PSone plugged into my TV, and it's great to play some of the old games and reminisce. However it must be said that this console is the easiest I have ever had for setting up and beginning to play, and despite looking and feeling quite dated it is still very fun to play. It is also one of the hardiest consoles, perhaps ever. Mine is at least 13 years old, 5 or 6 of which it spent neglected in a cupboard and it still works perfectly.
The games are still as addictive as ever, and what's more the games can be picked up from around £2-5, which is a bargain for some of the titles. The console itself ranges from £10-30. Fans of Xbox Live Arcade and the games of Playstation Network should definately consider buying themselves a PSone. A PSone memory card is required to save the games though, unfortunately as it has no internal storage system and the memory cards are getting harder and harder to find.
Overall, despite strong competition from all other consoles that are currently out, this console has one advantage over every single console out today. Price. The cheapness of everything on it makes it a worthwhile investment, and games are getting more and more collectible as time goes on. Worth a look at the least.
Summary: A goof buy for casual gamers, maybe an investment for a few decades time.
