... by making Quake III playable over a 28.8kbps modem while giving id's talented artists and designers the freedom to experiment with their artistic abilities without worrying about frame rates, is truly an accomplishment. And my god does it show. The graphical appeal of Quake III is a mix of hi-tech and gothic art, and sometimes these styles intersect, resulting in a high degree of originality. Walls, floors, and ceilings are covered in dirt; pentagrams are painted on surfaces; organic columns reach from the...more

(NOTE: This is a review of the modification "Quake 3 Fortress", but because there isn't a specific category for this (yet!) I've put it in the Quake 3 Arena section for now) No apologies... this is a big review, 'cos it's a game I *really* love. If you don't want to sit through the game's history, skip down to the row of asterisks, which is where the main part of the review begins... I've been a game player for a long time - starting on an Atari 2600 console at the start of the 80s, and working my way through a ZX Spectrum, Atari ST, Gameboy, CDi, Playstation, Neo Geo Pocket, and more combinations of PC hardware ...  Read the complete review

One more time, one more match, 30 more frags - just one more victory and I?ll be ready to call it a night. Yeah, right. I've been here before... many times...long ago. A hell of a lot of you will know what to do when you play Quake III Arena for the first time. You'll know how the controls work, how to operate each weapon, when to run for health, and when to rush into a crowd of competitors with guns blazing. Some of you will even be highly skilled players in your very first Quake III Arena Deathmatch. This is because very little has changed in terms of gameplay here. This is Quake. Rocket launchers, machine guns, rail guns, lightning guns, and shotguns ...  Read the complete review

Having created such hype in the gaming market is it worth it the simple answer is GET UNREAL TORUNAMENT INSTEAD. With Positively excellant cartoon graphics the gameplay the sound and the amount of stuff you can get as add on is good. I I have had this game a fair while now and since Quake 3 was spawned by Unreal Tournament not the other way around it is still not a bad game. The game has some cool guns and improvements on the others, texture detail is good but only hits that sweet spot if you like the toon like graphics. Gameplay wise I feel that it lacks something and this is particularly shown when you compare it to the first and second installments. ...  Read the complete review

When most people think of first-person shooters, id Software immediately springs to mind. The small Texas-based company has been involved in almost all of the first-person shooters that are considered classics. Quake spawned a rabid fan base on the Internet that still watches id's every move. So when id revealed that the next game in the series, Quake III Arena, would be specifically designed as a multiplayer game, fans weren't quite sure what to think. But id's purpose became increasingly clear when it released a succession of Quake III Arena technology demos for public scrutiny. The resulting game is not only worthy of its lineage, but it may very well be ...  Read the complete review
