Quake 3 arena is a top quality multi-player PC game. For those new to the Quake games, if there are any of you, they basically involving fragging (killing) as many alien-like beings as possible in order to save the world. Well that was until Quake 3. Quake 1 and 2 were linear affairs like Doom whereas Quake 3 is played in an arena much like the Roman Coliseum only a futuristic version.

Quake 3 is a predominantly multi-player over the net game but the one player mode is entertaining and thorough as well. Basically you choose your character and are thrust into one of many arenas to frag the living daylights out of anything that moves whilst avoiding rockets, plasma missiles and plain old shotgun bullets.

Quake 3 has firmly lost its grip on reality, this game is absolute bloodthirsty carnage. Do not let your gran see you playing this one. The arenas are very well designed with each one significantly different to the last. They are all fairly futuristic with the exception of a few dank dungeon type blood fests. The arenas are excellent as they are large enough to explore thoroughly and yet not so big that you can go for long without meeting another enemy.

The single player game involves working your way through various arenas leaving a trail of carnage and gibs in your wake as you stride forward to a final confrontation. This is immensely fun to play and I have not to this day found a more effective stress buster than blasting cyborg aliens and massively over-sized walking eyes out of existence.

The graphics are good and the frame rate is amazing for an older game. It runs perfectly on my 733Mhz, 128mb Ram PC with a 16mb video card installed. Obviously if you have a significantly worse spec PC then it might not be a smooth and you might have to sacrifice graphical excellence for a faster frame rate.

The multi-player is where Quake 3 excels especially if you arrange to play your mates over the net. Games are gene
rally fun although get really tedious if you have a slow internet connection like me. Being a mainly online experience there are hundreds of Quake mods out there for you to download to enhance the gaming experience.

If you are looking for a no frills, gorey, simplistic, shoot now never ask question game then why not give Quake a go, unless of course you are an Unreal Tourney fan. They are both equally good in my opinion.

4 stars.

No, SilverDog's opinions are not churned. I thought that, but if you actually bother to read some youŽd see that they are generally VU.

Quake 3 is a bit beefy for my humble PC. Luckily the Dreamcast version is pretty good too :)
