As pilot selected to fly the experimental R9 spaceship, part of the R-Type series you must battle the evil Bydo Empire. I never liked this type of game - probably because I was never very good at them. However, others loved them and this is seen to be one the best examples of the genre, so here goes... R-Type is a sideways scrolling shoot-em-up which puts you in control of a space ship against wave upon wave of enemy fighters. The fighters attack you in formations which can be learnt to cope with them more effectively but even so the game is extremely hard.
