Advantages: Classic Game, very addictive.

Disadvantages: Not widely available

Once again I am returning to my youth with a review of a Sega Mega Drive Game (Note:Megadrive games are put in Amiga Section on Dooyoo!). On this occasion I will be reviewing Road Rash 2. When I was about 10years old I always remember visiting my cousins in Liverpool and like me they owned a Mega Drive and among their games collection was Road Rash, possibly the simplest yet one of the most addictive games around, so you can imagine my excitement while wondering around our local charity shop a few days ago when I see Road Rash 2 for the Megadrive complete with box and instruction manual for just £1! It was a must have purchase!

*** What is Road Rash 2? ***

Road Rash 2 is the sequel to Road Rash. It was released on the Megadrive in the early 90's. It is a motorbike racing game in which you race against 15 other riders through the streets, along your route you must avoid other traffic, animals and their droppings in the road, police and other riders who don't hesitate in throwing the odd kick or punch your way or even hitting you with a club or chain to knock you off you bike!

The aim of the game is to race your way through various US states on your bike and work your way up through the levels. To work your way up you must finish each race in 1st, 2nd or 3rd place; you will then be awarded prize money which you can use to upgrade your bike to better models.

The bikes are split into 3 categories: Ultra Lights, Super Bike and Nitro. All bikes have their individual strengths and weaknesses as well as different handling techniques. These can all be found from the main menu in the Bike Shop. As you progress though the levels you will find that you need to upgrade your bike in order to keep up with the competition.

There are 5 levels to complete each with 5 races. When you begin in level one the races are approximately 6 miles long with a few cars, animals and usually one police bike along the way, as you progress the traffic will increase along with the police presence and you may even find animals in the road as well as their droppings! So to stay on your bike you must keep concentration, remember to throw back kicks and punches to your fellow riders and try and avoid getting knocked off your bike.

If you get knocked off your bike and the police are nearby you will be 'Busted' and fined, the amount will depend on your level. If you are repeatedly knocked off but still lucky enough to avoid the police you may not be lucky enough to avoid wrecking your bike and having to pay for the repairs. If you have no money left to pay fines or repairs then your bike is seized and you return to level one with a basic bike and $1000.

*** Game play ***

I really enjoy playing this game, although it is pretty simple and almost the same thing on each race I still find the game very addictive and find myself going back for more.

There is a 2 player mode which my friend and I tried to play last night however we found that there was a delay between us pressing the buttons and the bike moving so we gave up and played singly instead. Two player mode can be played both singly and Split-Screen. Due to the delay problem we found that playing singly was better although it meant that we didn't have the excitement of playing together.

The graphics in the game are reasonable; they are basic with a static backdrop and a rolling road in front of you. The colours are clear and images are sharp and quite detailed.

The menus are easily navigated around and the controls are very simple to pick up and use.

I would recommend this game. I would say that as a game it would be pretty simple for children to pick up with the simple controls and ease of movement, however due to the slight violence of the punching and kicking I would say it is at parents' discretion as to whether their child should play it. The game doesn't come with any age restrictions and the violence that is present is not bloody or gory in any way.

*** Availability ***

Availability of this game will be extremely rare, I was lucky to find it in the local charity shop, so I would say eBay will be your best bet.

Thanks for reading. Lou.x

Please Note: I am also on Ciao as gingelou

Summary: Great Classic game definately worth a play!
