Advantages: Nice visuals, good bike handling, good music, fighting on bikes is great fun, new nitro boost

Disadvantages: Not hugely different from the first game

Much the same as its predecessor, Road Rash 2 is a simple but addictive motorbike racing game in which you compete in illegal racing matches across the highways of America on a range of supercharged bikes. As in the original you can punch other drivers from their bikes, or alternatively you can boot them into the path of oncoming traffic or club them over the head with one of several weapons, namely a kosh, a crowbar or a bikechain.

The colourful and well-designed graphics are much the same as in the first game, if slightly more polished, and manage to convey a strong sense of speed as you tear along the highways, whilst the controls are responsive and the maps varied and increasingly challenging, with later races being much longer and with far more twists and turns in the road. The music is great too, adding to the already tense excitement.

Aside from your fellow racers there are cops and traffic (both ways) to be navigated around, though one new feature Road Rash 2 presents is a nitro booster to help get you out of particularly tricky situations. As before prize money can be spent on upgrading to faster and faster bikes, all of which handle differently, and the game has a good difficulty curve that helps it remain engaging throughout.

The only real cricitism that can be levelled at Road Rash 2 is that it is pretty similar to the first game with just some well-executed tweaks and new features here and there and a new set of tracks to play with, but this is not bad thing, and the game remains good, violent, arcade racing fun.

Summary: A fantastic racing game with beat-em-up elements
