Ugh, this is such an addicting strategy game. I have been playing Real Time Strategy games (RTS) for years, and the Starcraft series is my favorite one out there.
First of all, you should not be playing this until you have played Starcraft. Brood war is the expansion pak to Starcraft. There are two main reasons you should play these in order. One, is the fact that the single player story line continues into the expansion. The story line won't make sense in here if you didn't beat the first one. Second reason is, you need to know what you are doing in Brood War. Starcraft has an excellent tutorial to help you learn more about the game.
Now as for the game itself. There are three races, Terran, Zerg, and Protoss. Each race has their pros and cons. For example, Protoss are very strong, but very expensive to build. Zerg build quickly but need to attack in numbers to be effective.
Basically, the point of this game is to build an army to destroy the other army. You have a limit cap of 200, which means you can't have the sum of the supply of units to be more than 200. Some units take one supply, and some take as many as 8.
This game requries a lot of strategy and knowing just about everything about all three races to be effective. The guide books help as well as the tutorial. Anyone interested in getting into an RTS should really check this out.
