Premium Review The Secret of Monkey Island: A Rum-Fuelled, Rowdy Adventure (273 words)
by - written on 01/11/09 (Very useful, 12 readings)
Rating:

The Secret of Monkey Island was first released on the Commodore Amiga home computer in 1990. The game genre is commonly known as a "point and click" adventure, championed by the likes of Lucasarts and Sierra in the early days. The gameplay mechanics, though simple in theory, basically make the player explore scenarios and surroundings, involving the character (or characters) in the plotline which unfold in a narrative style. The player interacts with the world via an interface which contains verbal commands and an inventory system. Onscreen characters can be moved around the gameworld by a few simple clicks of the mouse, hence the "point and click" ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Remembering Monkey Island (366 words)

Interestingly, Lucas arts are about to relaunch a new version of this classic game, using the same characters we wee introduced to nearly twenty years ago. Anyone who is familiar with the wonderful Monkey Island game on the Amiga (do they still make Amigas?!) will know just how pleasurable and nostalgic this game is. You take on the role of the rather dashing and handsome Guybrush Threepwood, one of those names which will always stay with you. Guybrush is a wannabe pirate, who is on a mission to solve the secret of Monkey Island. Quite what that secret was, I never found out, because I never got far enough in the game. I was pretty rubbish at computer games ...  Read the complete review

I originally played this game on my Dad's Amiga 1200 when I was about 7, so how pleased was I when I found I was able to download it as abandonware and play it on my PC through DosBox? It really took me back to my childhood and led me to search for other classic Amiga games to relive those long-lost memories. In Secret of Monkey Island you control Guybrush Threepwood, a young man who desperately wants to become a pirate and achieve fame & fortune. The game is played from a 3rd person perspective, and for it's day the sounds, graphics and colours were ahead of their time. Shortly after the game begins, you are advised to go to the Scumm Bar ...  Read the complete review

The player takes on the role of Guybrush Threepwood, a pirate wannabe who isn't really cut out for anything. Guybrush has arrived at the seedy Melee Island with the premise of "seeking his fortune," and provided you stuck with it and weren't put off by the quality of the graphics or the frustration of getting stuck again and again, he eventually found... well, he had an adventure anyway. At a time when video game equivalents of Dungeons & Dragons style games were incredibly complex and dull, the 'point-n-click' genre leader "The Secret of Monkey Island" provided many eager game players with the opportunity to take part in a ...  Read the complete review

At a time when video game equivalents of Dungeons & Dragons style games were incredibly complex and dull, the 'point-n-click' genre leader "The Secret of Monkey Island" provided many eager game players with the opportunity to take part in a swashbuckling adventure.
