Advantages: excellent detail, humour, magic and playability
Disadvantages: erm very little, lots of disk swapping on the amiga, may be hard to find now
The Secret of Monkey Island will go down as being one of the all-time-classic computer games. It is worthy of this for a number of reasons. Firstly, the humour; I have still to play another game or series of games with such comedy, this really is a Tour de Force of fun - there's gool ol' slapstick, there's an abundance of witticisms, clever references to previous games, films and events and there are lots of running jokes, not to mention clever games and interractivity. Secondly, the graphics (of course for the time) were excellent and still retain a certain nostalgic charm. The attention to detail in this game was incredible, letting the zany and inventive minds of the creator's run wild. Thirdly, the gameplay was first class, rivalling most if not all of today's RPGs and adventure games. There were complex (again for the time) uses of coding never seen before. There was an interractive music system developed by LucasArts called SCUMM. There were many things to keep you occupied throughout your frustration and puzzle-solving, including in-jokes, side games/puzzles and nice touches that are the trade mark of all LucasArts games. The plot follows the trials (hoho) and tribulations of pirate-wannabe Guybrush Threepwood. He has one sharp wit and very tight britches. There's trouble afoot for Guybrush as the evil un-dead pirate LeChuck is doing the rounds. There's also the secret of Monkey Island to discover and the added dilema of the love of his life: govenor Elaine Marley. Monkey Island was and is a real gem and anybody who plays games that hasn't played this one (the game that gave adventure gaming a stick of dynamite up the behind) should go and order it now. I hear that it is still availiable on CD-Rom for computers. There have been many re-releases, including the whole trilogy in one box - a must have if you've none. Monkey Island is a real nostalgic roller-coaster ride that epitomi
ses what adventure gaming should be like. Forget all the bells-and-whistles of today's adventure games and go and get this. Pull your old, dusty Amiga out of the cupboard and start the frantic disk-swapping and savour the memories. Harry

- 04/12/00 I had an Amiga myself many years ago. Well ahead of its time when you think of the quality of its games. |
