Advantages: Great Gameplay, brilliant graphics and addictive.

Disadvantages: None really!

With this next review I will be continuing with the Megadrive games theme, this time with a review of World of Illusion: the sequel to my last game review, World of Illusion. Please Note this review is of the Megadrive format, although all the Megadrive games have been put in the Amiga games on Dooyoo!


*** World Of Illusion ***

Following the success of Castle of Illusion Sega and Disney released a sequel a year later called World Of Illusion. Again as all Megadrive games did, the game came presented in a box that was in-between DVD and VHS Video Box size. The box contained an instruction manual and 16-Bit cartridge specifically for the Megadrive system.


*** Gameplay ***

World of Illusion features Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. The game is a platform game suitable for all ages and abilities; it is full of the usual great Disney graphics and lovely bright colours.

Starting the game is simply a case of putting the cartridge in the Megadrive and waiting a short time for it to start up, there is a few screens showing Mickey and Donald practicing magic trick for a show they are doing, during one of these screens we see Donald uncover a doorway with a curtain in front, Donald steps in, closes the curtain and 'poof' he is gone! Mickey then follows Donald in to find him and he too disappears, we then see the pair falling through a dark area and at the same time we are being told how Mickey and Donald have stumbled into an unknown world of mystery and magic which is controlled by a evil magician, the only way out of this world is for Mickey and Donald to work their way through many levels, learning new magic along the way. Following this story you will see the main menu screen. This is where you can choose to start the game in one player or 2 players mode or enter the options.

In the options screen you can play with sound effects, select the difficulty of the levels and customise the controls of the game.

Once you have adjusted the settings to your liking you can start the game. Starting the game in one player mode you will see Mickey on the screen in a nice bright forest setting, if you prefer you can change the setting so you play as Donald, this is done in the options menu. As with all games the first thing I do is stand on the spot and press all the buttons one at a time to see what each one does, by doing this in this game I discover that we have a jump button, a button that flicks a magic rug which is used to kill enemies and a button which makes you run if you press it and hold a direction at the same time, all pretty easy stuff. After my little play with the buttons, I start to move through the first level, flicking the rug at random enemies along the way and upon being attacked from behind by one I started to pay more attention as this game was clearly pretty easy to play, but much more of a challenge than the previous Castle of Illusion with enemies popping up from anywhere! The level was pretty simple to complete, with the usual bad guy at the end. Now as a 25 year old playing this game I decided 'yep of course it will be easier for me, but what about a kid?' so that's when I called on my 5 year old brother James to have a go, obviously he thought it was Christmas being rarely invited into my room to play games! After explaining the controls to him I left him to it and just watched in the background, to my amazement he made it through the level and onto the second level a lot quicker than I expected! As expected he did loose a few lives along the way, but nevertheless he finished that level pretty smartish! I let him carry on playing until he was bored, this also took longer than I thought as he really liked the game, however after reaching a point in the second level that was "just too hard" and he had died and continued, then died and continued some more he had finally had enough! So I asked him what he thought of the game and the answer I got was "It was good, but I cant do that bit, can you do it for me and I'll have another go tomorrow" momentary pause... "After school cuz I like it!" So I'm guessing that means thumbs up from James, it is also a thumbs up from me as I also enjoy playing this game and have been playing it the past few nights before bed.

The two player mode is exactly the same levels as the one player mode, however unlike other two player games where you have a split screen you are both on the same screen and instead of racing each other to the end you have to work together to get through. I think this is an unusual thing for a game to have and at the same time I think it is a good thing as in a way it teaches that not everything is a race for the finish like most games and something's you have to work together and learn together to get things done, which I think is an excellent message to send out especially to children and young people playing.

The levels are extremely original and inventive and the graphics are amazing especially considering how old the game actually is.

The music in the game is of a much higher quality than Castle of Illusion and the sounds effects are really good too, I would describe a lot of them as 'cute'!

I found the controls of the game to be relatively easy after a bit of practice, and James picked them up reasonably easy too, apart from in the more exciting parts where he forgot them and just tried his luck with any button!

I have never completed this game so I cant tell you if the ending is good, however I do play the game over and over as it never seems to get boring!


*** Do I Recommend World of Illusion? ***

Yes I would highly recommend playing this game, I find it has a long lifespan and is fairly addictive. The game is great for children, but at the same time adults can enjoy it too. I found the idea of the game to be very original even though it is a sequel to Castle of Illusion. I think this game is an enjoyment to play and definitely a game you can play over and over again. Overall a great gaming experience.


*** Availability ***

As with all Megadrive games, it will be rare for you to find this game in the shops, however I'm sure with that magic eBay search button, you can find the game on there probably priced from as low as 99p!
