I've heard (and read) mixed reviews on Kam DJ products and so was a bit reluctant to buy a Kam amp to use in my main DJ set up. I went to a DJ store and tested a number of amps and settled on this one. The Kam KCA 1200 was one of the better performing and cheapest options in the output range I wanted.

Coming in at around £150 nowdays (I did pay a tad more for mine but this was a few years ago now) this is a real bargain. The model I have is black all over (see picture) and has no real distinguishing features. When Kam originally designed this amp they were focusing only on performance. Its not an ugly piece of kit but it is by no means a beatuiful piece of audio equipment. Kam have recently redesigned this amp and it now has a nice shiny silver fascia. It has the exact same features as mine. I have never used the updated version so this review is based purely on my experiences with the original model.

The KCA 1200 is a rack mounted amp. This means that is has additional holes in the faceplate so that you can secure it into a rack which houses other audio equipment or into a flightcase (as I have mine). All it takes to do this is four screws which, if memory serves me correctly, were provided with the amp.

The output of the amp is 600w each for the two channels (hence the 1200 in the title) or 300w rms each. This is more than enough for what I have needed it for. The amp provides enough power to entertain pubs, halls and small bars. I've even used it at a few house parties but they never got anywhere near their full power at those.

The amp gets very very hot if used over long periods of time so, like most amps, it has a built in fan cooler and vented casing to allow cool air to enter and cool down the components. Mine have never overheated but it is worth keeping an eye on the red indicator lights. If these go on for more than a few seconds you really need to turn your music down.

Input-wise, you have a number of choices. It has XLR inputs, jack inputs and RCA phono inputs. With regards to outputs, you can use either the Speakon or the binding post outputs. I've only ever used the speakon outputs on mine but they work perfectly.

Kam have put together a really well made amp with the KCA 1200. Its sturdy and very heavy. No flashy gimmicks or unnecessary features which can distract from its real purpose. It just provides good quality, loud music. Highly recommended.
