Great sound in true Marantz fashion (Marantz PM 4000)

I?ve had this amp for nearly two years now and it has been great. Its seen many new components and it seems to work well with them all. It has all the facilities you could ever want including a remote control, 6 inputs, 2 tape loops, separate record selector and not to mention a great phono stage. The facia looks a bit busy with a lot of knobs and buttons but don?t let the looks but you off. The sound quality in my opinion is great for a budget amp. I often get audiophile sound quality from it with good quality recordings. It works very well with my Sony CDP-XE530 CD player. It also draws attention to the vocals but at the same time captures every detail in true Marantz fashion. You can here the ambience in the music which is rare for an amp at this price. In fact only ten years ago an amp this would have cost at least £500! Tonally it tends to play it on the exciting side of safe. In other words its an exciting amp when you want to be but its also smooth with classics. I think that?s why this amp is so popular because it works well with most HI-FI equipment and most different types of music.

As for build quality its quite as good as some of them more expensive models I have seen but its still perfectly good. It comes with a two-year warranty, which will come in handy if you like to listen to your music loud.

Overall its been a great buy and you can now pick them up for just £99 because a new model (the PM4200) has replaced it. I know exactly why this amp has won so many awards.

Update December 2002: This amp has a very small fualt which is prompting me to consider upgrading. If I listen to headphones (sen hd495) with the volume pot at 10 o'clock the amp some times cuts out. I like the Marantz sound and my PM4000 has been very good so I am going to upgrade to a Marantz PM6010 OSE. My will give my PM4000 my parents as a christmas pressent so I can also replace their dieing 1984 Sony Amp which has found in a skip.
