Advantages: Build quality, Six inputs, Excellent sound quality

Disadvantages: Lacks outright power

I bought my Marantz PM4000 together with a tuner and a CD player about eighteen months ago, as a newcomer to the world of hi-fi separates.

The unit was recommended as a best buy in its price category by "What Hi-fi?" magazine, so I took the word for it and bought one.

I bought my separates from Richer Sounds, where I found the service to be friendly but rather slow. However Richer Sounds' main appeal is the price, and I would recommend them for this reason alone.

I have little to compare this product with, but the build quality appears to be excellent, and the sound quality flatters any input source.

I have a Marantz ST4000 tuner connected to this amplifier, which sounds great, as well as a Kenwood 200 CD multichanger, which also sounds good. The amp is easy to use, and all Marantz products have a distinctive look - classy and understated - which I am a big fan of.

I don't pretend to be a hi-fi expert, but as a first time separates buyer, I am very pleased with my purchase. This amp offers excellent quality with plenty of scope for adding additional components (e.g. Minidisc or CD-R) for a very reasonable price.

Update: I've now had this amp for four years and it has performed faultlessly. It still sounds great and has provided an excellent base to build a system around. I am very glad of the six input channels, as I now have it hooked up to two CD players, one CD recorder, a tuner and a freeview TV box. I have also bought some Eltax Symphony 7 floorstanding speakers, and the amp has no problem driving these (some budget amps can sound strained when trying to drive big speakers). Think the model has been replaced by the PM4010, which is very similar. Definitely recommended!
