Advantages: Really works, gives me 48+ hours of freshness.
Disadvantages: It costs more than normal anti-perspirants, but you only need to apply it every 2-3 days.
In the past few years I've begun to notice that normal anti-perspirants were no longer having much effect on me, and no matter what brand I used, I would only last a few hours before ending up with rather damp armpits... not pleasant! I had heard of stronger anti-perspirants but I was worried about the long term effects of using them, as I couldn't imagine them to be very good for you. However I reached a breaking point when I started having to always wear a cardigan or jacket to cover up my armpits and decided to look into buying one of these stronger products.
I did have some brand names in mind, namely PerspireX as it had glowing reviews on here. At £7.15 it would be the most I would ever spend on an anti-perspirant but I was wasting money on products which weren't working for me if I didn't so I knew I would have to make the plunge. When I got to Boots however I noticed a couple of the well known companies also have stronger versions, and when I noticed this Dove Maximum Protection anti-perspirant for £4.99 I quickly changed my mind. These stronger products aren't in a prominent place amongst the various spray cans and roll-ons of normal anti-perspirants and deodorants, and are actually on a shelf at the bottom tucked away.
~~ So what's this maximum protection all about? ~~
This anti-perspirant is unlike any others I have used before. For a start it comes packaged in a box, and promises 48 hour protection against wetness. It states it delivers all-day freshness through odour-fighting technology but what really made me choose this product over the others on the shelf is it contains ¼ Dove moisturising cream. When I think of Dove I do picture a gentle moisturising cream and that same Dove smell... and I guess that's what swung me around to buying this. I have read of some of these stronger anti-perspirants causing stinging and dryness, so I hoped the ¼ Dove cream would help with this. Inside the box there is also a little leaflet explaining how best to use this product and it was the directions on how to apply which quite amused me.
You see, with this anti-perspirant (and other stronger ones on the market) you have to apply it to your underarms before going to bed. Whilst resting, the formula provides wetness protection, which then lasts throughout the following day, even after a shower. Yes, that's right, you can even take a shower and this stuff will still work. It does state it can also be applied in the morning, but if you think about it, it's much easier to apply before going to bed as you don't need to panic about getting marks on your clothes or waiting around for it to dry before you get dressed.
The product itself looks similar to a roll on except the packaging is much larger. It has a dial on the bottom and you twist it around a couple of clicks so the cream appears at the top, then you simply rub it on your underarms until it's absorbed, which only takes a few seconds. I was waiting for some sort of stinging but thankfully I have never suffered whilst using this product. At most I get a very, very slight tingling sensation but this doesn't last too long and I barely notice it.
~~ Does it work? ~~
I've been using this product a little over a month now and I've never been happier with a product which truly lives up to its claims. My arms have never been drier, even in the stifling heat in the office. I used to hide my arms under cardigans but now I wear short sleeved tops without any worry, and I can't remember when the last time I could do that was. There's also not as much odour, although I must admit towards the 2-3 day mark if I'm in a particularly hot room (my office at work is mostly windows so it becomes like a greenhouse!) then I do smell a very slight odour, but nothing a spray of perfume doesn't cover up. I usually re-apply this every 3rd night as it last longer than the 48 hours it promises for me. It is strange getting dressed on a morning as I automatically go for the deodorant but then I remember I don't need to apply any!
As for my underarms, well they don't feel any different since I've been using this anti-perspirant. They haven't dried up at all and I hope that the cream is helping. I am still worried about the effects of using a stronger anti-perspirant, but so far I haven't had any bad experiences.
~~ Recommended? ~~
I would highly recommend this product. Despite its high price tag, the fact you only need to apply this every 2-3 days means it does last a long time and I feel like I've still got tons more to use from my bottle and I've used it for over a month now. I've never bought such an effective, brilliant anti-perspirant before and if you are struggling to find a one that works, then I highly recommend you go for this stronger version than continue to waste money on the less effective brands.
I got mine from Boots and it cost £4.99, you can also buy this from the boots.com website.
Summary: The most effective anti-perspirant I have ever used.
