I love this deodrant. I get it cheap £1.50 from a local discount store and its ace.
It comes out as a gel and feels so much better than spray or roller ball which I have never got the hang of.
The best thing though is that it leaves no white marks on clothes once its dried under your arms.
There is no need to use a huge amount of it as it works all day and well past I have gone to bed and I work in a pretty labourious sweaty job.
As you don't need to use that much it goes further than you think.
It does not really smell that much with only a slight fragrance. It smells of cool wave not a force 10 hurricane!
The only slight gripe is that after you use it some of the gel can scoat the sides so when yo put the cap on it pushes it down and you get sticky hands. This is avoidable but at 6.30am its not at the top of things to do. I have thought about the design of it but I do not see a way around it.
I also like the fact that the gel comes out as though its meat going through a grinder! Nice. And its clear transluscent not milky coloured like some!
Oh and best of all it does not sting like some products do. I think thats the alcohol in them so either this does not have any ( i have just looked and its got alcohol denat ) but you could not tell
After trying various deodorant throughout my my teens and being disappointed with all of them, I eventually got the Gillette clear gel from an aunt in a Christmas gift pack and I have never used anything else since.
Why it's my favourite...
It's the best deodorant out there for men by a long way. I've used it for around 15-20 years now and although it costs a little more than some others (currently about £3.00), it is certainly worth it. I tend to shower every day, but when the odd occasion occurs where I don't have time I know that I'll still get through the rest of the next day smelling fine because Gillette Gel is up to the test!
How it works...
Gillette Gel is different to most deodorants in that (as it says on the packet) it is a Gel. It comes in clear twister dispenser (as per the image except the lid is now white - that image is out of date!) so you can see what you are putting on and how much you have left. For best effect; put the gel on straight after you've had a shower and leave it for a few minutes to dry - It doesn't leave white marks on clothes like other products do, but it can rub off when wet which will prevent it working so effectively.
Scope for improvement...
Unfortunately, Gillette haven't got everything right. The twister dispenser doesn't push the gel out to the end of the plastic unit. It effectively means you lose about 1 stick for every 6 or so you use which is frustating given the cost (and the fact that you can see it there). A few taps whilst holding it upside-down will help you get the dregs, but there'll always be some that goes to waste.
I wouldn't use anything else and successful girlfriends and my wife is always impressed (which is probably the best measure). I always keep a stock of them in my bathroom for fear that Gillette will stop producing it some day.
King of the Gillettes - The Company
Gillette is a subsidiary company of Proctor and Gamble, the multinational pharmaceutical company. It was started in 1908 by King Gillette when he patented a safety razor. Since then they have become well known for producing shaving products with ever increasing numbers of razors on them. But they have also expanded into both shaving gels and balms but also deodorants.
Hair Gel - The Product
Gillette's anti-perspirants are quite different from other deodorants that I've come across. They are neither spray nor technically a roll-on. Instead they are a clear gel which claims to have 24hour protection.
The shape is quite different from competitors too. It is probably best described as 'rounded cuboid' in shape (sorry geometry was never my strong point). This makes it quite easy to hold, being 5 inches high, by 3.5 wide and 1 inch deep, approximately. The specifics of it vary from week to week, some have bumps down the side for better grip etc. The whole package costs a little under £3.
There is a nut on the base which, when turned pushes the inner base up forcing the deodorant through a grid of square openings beneath the lid at the top. The gel then oozes out of these holes like, well like sweat from a pore, ironically enough. Occasionally on pops out and hits you in the eye, leaving you temporarily blinded.
It contains 70ml of this gel. This keeps me going for, perhaps, a month. But it really varies as to how much you feel you need to use and how many different places you may wish to apply. Although I'd caution against applying it on the face or other sensitive areas.
It's not Cool to Wave - The Odour
Gilette produce two of these clear gel anti-perspirants; the Cool Wave and Arctic Ice. Both of which will leave you smelling like a teenage boy. Cool Wave is that bit more subtle, however; Arctic Ice is somewhat overpowering. I'd love to compare the smells to lemons and cranberries and other aromas, but this is boy smell so it mostly has the whiff of the various chemicals which it contains. I do prefer the Cool Wave and would rather pick that up should it be on special offer.
I note that Gillette describes the smell as 'invigorating'. Enough said, really.
Gillette: The best a hairy man can get? - Assessment
The biggest question with any product claiming to be anti-perspirant is, 'Does it work?' If it does not keep the user dry and sweat free then that delightful laboratory smell will simply be battling against a more natural fruity odour.
I discovered this product when I was a teenager, and anyone who has had any experience of teenage boys (or has once been a teenage boy) will know that they need an anti-perspirant like a male dog needs a lamppost. Once I had discovered it, I stuck on it for the next ten years as nothing else quite did the job.
Things have settled down since that time but I have recently tried it again to see if it is still as effective as it was then. And it certainly is. I have no problems worrying about sweat or its effects now.
But I do have a couple of problems with it. I never noticed when I was a teenager, probably because I was growing so fast, but I have noticed that I need to replace shirts and t-shirts much more regularly. This seems to be the trade off when considering the level of deodorant to use; the stronger ones bleach armpits, the weaker ones fail to work. Due to its claim of 24hour protection, and its effectiveness, this is one of the most stringent deodorants I have used and has a very negative effect on any material it comes into contact with. Therefore it must be used with care and thought.
My second problem is that, due to it being a gel rather than a liquid, it does take a long time to dry. Once applied you have three choices; get it on your clothes and have to throw them out; get out a hairdryer and apply to the pits; or run around flapping your arms like a chicken until you are either arrested or the gel has dried. I go with the last.
So, yes it works. But at what cost?
Would I advise getting it? It really depends how much of a teenage boy you are. I am not anymore and may avoid in future.
I really don't know what possessed the wife to pick one of these up for me, and I told her so. I've never been one for Roll on Deodorants as they seem too fiddly and I just like to spray and go. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and started to use it when i got it about 4 months ago, and yes it was ok, but I probably wouldn't use or buy it again.
This is a large plastic thing, as usual the Dooyoo picture is just right. How you use this is you take the lid off and there is a long ish rectangular bit. This is where the Gel comes out. You turn the little wheel at the bottom and this will push the Gel up. So you just rub this under your arms and that is it.
I was surprised at how quick this dried. I thought it seemed sticky at first when I applied it, and I hated the feeling of dragging this through my underarm hair, but it wasn't too bad in the end.
This has a nice smell and I do like the Cool Wave brand. It smells fresh and airy, sort of like a early morning windy day at the beach with a bit of Sunshine in the background.
Yes, this was ok in the end, but I can get the same smell in my usual Body spray and that is less fiddly and does the same job. The wife said she got it because it was on offer for £1, which was an ok but, but it's just not really my kind of thing.
Once again I was out bargain hunting after a look on HotUKDeals i managed to find this Gillette Deodorant cool wave gel tucked away at the back of the bottom shelf marked up at £1 in Asda, I have used this before and as it usually costs around £2.50 - £3.50 a grabbed a couple while it was cheap.
What Is It?
Gillette Cool Wave Deodorant Gel , the name speaks for it's self really, it's a clear gel in a plastic container which is similar in size and shape to a large bar of soap, the centre part is clear so you can see how much gel you have left, the silver colour base has a small wheel on it which dispenses the gel when turned, take the silver colour lid off the top and you see a smooth surface with little holes in where the gel comes out, a couple of turns of the wheel gives you enough gel for an application, a blue label with the Gillette brand design finishes off this trendy modern looking product.
As I said I have used this product before so bought a few when I seen it for a Quid, It's a very nice looking and compact shape receptacle and the wheel/knob at the bottom is easily turned for you to dispense the exact amount of gel you need, and you can see exactly how much you have left too!
The clear gel has a nice light clean, very fresh smell and a small amount spreads around very easy and dries within a minute or two, do make sure you let it dry as i have had marks left on a black T shirt which i think was caused by not letting it dry before dressing.
Does it do it's job? I have used lots of top brand deo and I think this one comes out on top, nice and fresh not an overpowering smell, easy to use and keeps me dry and fresh all day, I have never had to re-apply the same day and it's a good size so it lasts ages.
Find it on offer for a quid and it's a real bargain, if you have to pay full price it's still a good buy, five stars from me.
Also available in a couple of other flavoures, I have seen Arctic Ice & Power Rush.
