Impulse was founded in 1972 in South Africa initially and was then brought to the UK in 1979 by Elida Gibbs. It was tagged with the by-line 'Men can't help acting on impulse", with new fragrances being added regularly.
It was only in 2009 that the whole brand was re-vamped to make it more contemporary, into the packaging we now all know and love. They are now the UK's number one in the women's body spray market. Their revised mission statement was to offer consumers delicate everyday sections and have been launching a new fragrance every year meaning the range is constantly updated and kept up to day. In 2009 Ann Gottlieb a fragrance designer created the Impulse Goddess as part of their rebranding scheme and it is a truly beautiful fragrance.
The Impulse City Collection was released in 2007, and there was three cities honoured – Paris, London and New York.
The New York spray brings together a fruity floral combination, with green apples, red berries and then jasmine and sandalwood. This mix of different scents gives the New York a sassy punch, and it is a nice modern fragrance that is feminine but not to floral and girly. The scent is a nice deep perfume and holds its strength for a good few hours after applying, though these City sprays do not seem to have the longevity of the other impulses and do wear off half way through the day
It is sold in one of Impulses standard sized aerosol cans which hold 75 ml. The Impulse cans are tall and slim. The top turns around to reveal the spray nozzle which you depress to apply. These 75ml cans are priced at around £1.99 each, but it tend to but them when they are on offer, normally either 99p each of 2 for £2 which makes them much better value.
The spray nozzle allows a wide diffusion of the body spray and works not only when the can is upright but when angled allowing easy application. The 75 ml can last me around 2 weeks when used once/twice daily. I often carry a can in my handbag as well to allow me to freshen up if I need to and as the cans are so slim they easily fit without taking up any room.
As a cheaper fragrance, the Impulse body sprays are very handy. Impulse sells at least 15 different fragrances. Three of the original ones include the 'London' 'Paris' and 'New York', in the City Collection.
The sprays are sold in a tall, slender can, with a twist lid that reveals the hole, which sprays. The can is green, with New York related pictures on the front. It has a Broadway sign, and tube ticket, and an I <3 New York badge on it. On the top of the front there is the Impulse logo, and on the back there is a list of ingredients, directions and other information.
Don't be put off by the name, the spray doesn't actually smell like it does in New York City! It smells fresh and sweet. The smell is of a blend of apples, red fruits, and jasmine notes.
This spray is easy and quick to use, and I would recommend if you are in a rush, or just quickly popping out. But, this fragrance doesn't last during the day, so it's not really an alternative for perfume. To get a lasting scent you would need to spray all over your body numerous times throughout the day.
I would say that this fragrance is a younger sent, and is probably not designed for older generations.
These are sold for around the £1.10 mark. I have seen varied prices in different shops though. You can purchase from Boots, Tesco and Superdrug, and other beauty and cosmetics stores.
I don't use mine very often, but with frequent daily use the spray will only last you around 3 weeks.
Unfortunately I have had to stop using these sprays because I have asthma, and aerosol sprays affect my chest. But, I would recommend, to anyone who doesn't have chest or breathing problems. Like I said before the fragrance won't last all day but, it is handy for going in you handbag, gym bag or toiletry bag. For what you get these are a reasonable price.
I have rated this 3 stars, because it doesn't last, but it is a nice smell and at a good price.

When a body spray promises to make you smell like New York you don't get the greatest opinion of this in the beginning I don't think, who wants to smell like smog, traffic, hot dogs, etc but don't worry the New York Impulse Body Spray is nothing like that. This body spray is part of the CIty collection and I think they also have a London fragrance. I actually got a bottle of this free when I bought some hair removing cream, an interesting combination but I was thankful for the free product and happy to try it.
I do like the Impulse body sprays as they are handy to use if you want a bit of fragrance but don't want to smell like perfume and get dressed up in anyway but I still want to smell quite nice and fresh. I use it if I am going to the gym or out for the morning to just run a few errands. Impulse Body Spray always takes me back to my teenage years. I think back this there were quite popular, this was a few years ago now and all my friends seemed to be wearing one or other of the different scents. Plus, I think it was probably the only form of "perfume" we could afford and we all wanted to smell nice to be able to pull the boys at the disco on a saturday night.
Even though I got it free I know it's quite a cheap product to buy in the first place so if you like these sprays it's always a good idea to stock up on a few of them. In Boots they sell them for about £1.20 a 75ml can which is quite a good deal. They do not last very long, especially if you spray them over your whole body, I think this can lasted me for about 2 weeks but that's really ok as you can just go and buy another one for that price.
By using this body spray Impulse tell you to, "Grab yourself a taste of the Big Apple! Fabulous Fifth Avenue shopping and cocktails with the girls at sundown." The design of the can is in keeping with this advertising as it features a Broadway rod sign, an I heart NY badge and other items such as that on it. The can then is just like all the others. It has a spray function at the top of the can and you can twist the top of the can so the hole is covered over when you are not using it.
I really like the smell of this Impulse body spray. The scent is a mixture of apple, red fruit and jasmine so it is light and fruity and a really pleasant and not too overpowering or sweet in any way. It is such a nice day time fragrance and you can really wear it all day long. I find if I spray it on in the morning I can smell it later in the day so it does last well. It does have a bit of a aerosol smell to it meaning that you can tell its come from a can but its still nice for a basic fragrance.
All in all a nice version of Impulse.
This is another in the cities fragrnaces of Impulse.
I am a little confused why this is New York. It just smells purfumey and not New Yorky!!!
It is the best out of the cities collection but a little too purfumey for me really. At £2.50 a bottle they are a little pricey but they are generally on offer somewhere either at a supermarket or Boots. I think they may even be cheap in the pound stores.
The fragrance does not last very long and so if you are relying on this for masking any niffy whiffy then you will need to reapply several times aday making the bottle not last very long and making it very expensive. I tend o just use once in a while and the bottle lasts me a good 6 months that way! They are a nice small size to be able to fit in bags or lockers and the top twists shut to stop it going off in oyur bag and emptying! Better than the removable lids they used to have as I kept loosing them!
To be honest there are better Impulse fragrances out there but it does depend on what you are looking for. I really hate purfume aso any body spray that smells like perfume is a big no to me. I just like the fruity or water fragances as they are softer and dont kill the back of your throat.
There are also other brands of body spray which do better fragrance than this one and if it is between this frangrance and Asda own make, I'd go for the Asda!!
I have recently reviewed the London scent from the Impulse collection of 'city' body sprays, after loving that one I decided to try the New York version. As with all the other city collection sprays it comes in a bottle with iconic pictures on the front, the New York bottle is green and has a Broadway sign, and I love New York badge etc on the front.
This is a body fragrance and as I like a strong scent I find I use a fair amount of this product. As a result of this is only lasts me a few weeks, however its price means that this isn't an issue. It costs between £1.50-£2.00 depending on where you buy from, I think this is a very affordable price.
As with all other Impulse sprays, the bottle has a plastic top which you slide around to reveal the part where the spray is released. The bottle is very sturdy and so can be thrown in your handbag without the worry that it will break, which I often worry about with carrying around perfumes. The container is pressurised and as such carries warning labels stating it should not be kept in direct sunlight and the bottle should not be pierced. It is extremely flammable so keep away from candles etc if you are putting it on in the evening.
The scent is a mixture of apple, red fruit and jasmine, I really like this as it is a slightly sweet and gentle scent. This is a great product for freshening up throughout the day and although it could be worn in the evening I feel it a scent I generally tend to wear in the day as I like a slightly deeper perfume in the evenings. I find that when sprayed on skin this scent doesn't linger for very long however, but if it is sprayed on your clothing as well then the scent is held much better.
Impulse are well known for their large variety of body sprays and I feel that they are a staple brand in the market and as such are trustworthy. I am sure I will be trying many more of their scents so expect even more reviews!
About Impulse New York
I bought this body spray from my local Boots recently for £1.89, which is a pretty reasonable price in my view. However, currently Boots have Impulse body sprays on offer at 2 for £3, making it an even better deal should you pick this up at the minute!
This limited edition body spray comprises one of three fragrances which feature in Impulse's 'City Collection'.
Packaged in a 75ml metallic silver/green bottle, which is nicely illustrated showing famous NYC sights such at the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building, this product is very pleasing on the eye, as well as on the purse strings.
To dispense the spray you simply turn the cap and press down. This allows for easy application with no fiddly lids involved.
What Does it Smell Like?
This scent of this body spray reminds me very much of my DKNY Be Delicious perfume. It smells extremely like apples which I guess is very apt considering the fragrance is a dedication to the 'Big Apple' itself. The fruity fragrance is really nice and is rather strong to begin with, but this soon quells leaving a lovely lingering aroma...well for a short while anyway!
How Long Does the Smell Last for?
Well to be brief - not very long at all! Once I spray myself with a fair wee amount of this product I usually find that no trace of its scent will remain as soon as a couple of minutes later. It has no staying power at all, which is a huge shame as the scent is really very nice.
It must also be stated that this body spray should not be used as an alternative to anti-perspirant deodrant. This body spray does not stop sweating, it simply masks smells for a very short time, so I would advise that you use this in conjuction with your regular deodrant to avoid any nasty stinks!
If you are looking for something that will offer a long lasting scent, then definitely stick to perfume, as this will not do the job.
This body spray is nice enough for the price and my bottle has lasted me a fairly long time - despite me using it almost on a daily basis. Nevertheless, this product would offer better value for money if it had sufficient staying power. Overall though, it is a great product to have in your bag for when you are on the go and just need a little spritz of something to freshen up after a long day.
I award this body spray an overall rating of 3 stars!
Thanks for reading!
I quite like body sprays and pick up a new one everytime I go to the supermarket (or wilkos, savers, £1shop.....).
I think they are a great idea and although the don't quite replace purfumes, I do think they are so handy. I mean, it's much easier to sling a bottle of deodrant in your bag than it is a bottle of purfume!!
I have so many different one's and never particulary stick too just one brand but a favourite of mine is this..
Impulse City Collection in New York ~
The bottle I have is different to the one in the picture above which I have had in the past, this one has a collection of New Yorky type things, such as an I love NY badge and Broadway sign. I don't know why they have done this though!
Like all of the Impulse body sprays this one has a twist and spray type lid, this is fixed onto the bottle and doesn't require taking off, you simply turn the lid around untill it click, spray, then twist back.
It's a very sweet, girly scent which I find simply divine, it has hints of apple, red fruits, orchid, jasmine, cyclamen and sandlewood. This blend of different scent work fabulously together, but if you don't particulary like sweet scents, maybe this won't be the one for you.
Don't go mad with it as it's quite strong, you only need a quick spray in the morning and you will still be able smell it in the evening, although strong at first it mellows into a nice, fresh scent as the day wears on.
You can find these pretty much anywhere and usually on offer for £1, the usually RRP is about £1.70ish.
Impulse New york is one of the best smelling sprays that I have come accross in a long time. The spray is beautifully presented in a bottle, the bottle is a light/medium green and has a white lid with a turn the nozzle applicator. This spray is part of the city collection including paris, new york and london the top main capitals of the world excluding rio de jenero.
There is lovely pictures on the front of it that are representing new yourk city with pictures of green apples. Green relating to the bottle and the apple relating to the big apple(NYC). The company that make impulse is unilever which also brought us Dove and Vaseline.
The bottles are sold in 75ml which i must say run out quickly, I bought a bottle and within two days it was gone. Even though I dont use it that much it was still a bit of a rip off for what I paid. I bought my impulse at a boots store for £2.89 which for a body spray is a heck of a lot more than I usually pay for a body spray.
The fragrnace is a mixture of apple, red fruit and jasmine notes which have infused a perfect smell. The smell is divine even though the price is a bit much it was worth every penny. This is my favourite body spray in the world because I just cant live without it. It is like my signuiture smell all my friends and family recognise me with that smell. You can currently buy it in boots for a £1 now which is cheap compared to when i first bought it. If you would like more information on this product go to www.unilever.com
I saw a miniature can of this impulse New York in Asda some time ago and though that it was both cute, discrete and the perfect size to keep in my desk drawer at work. Thinking back for the size of the can and the price, I was probably ripped off somewhat as the small can I got (the lid is half the size of the can!) cost me 99p. Full size impulse srays only sell for £1.73. My smaller can was the same size as the miniatures they sell in a three pack for £3. (around 1/3 the size of a normal can).
I bought this because I liked the design of the tin, it is part of the impulse range of "Paris" "London" "New York".. and it seemed to look a little fresher and newer than the old impulse scents that have been around for eons.
I did not test this in the shop as I could not see a tester and there were far too many people stood around for me to take to top off and spray it around. I was in a hurry, it was 99p, it had caught my eye, so I was buying it based upon the can design as I liked the silver/ green colours combo (yes, I know, it serves me right...). Though looking at it again, the picture on the can shows an emaciated woman who looks like Karen Carpenter with a 1970s perm... Not sure if impulse realise this?!
As intended, I took this to work and just left it in my drawer in the event I needed a body spray. Sure enough, a few weeks later, I had forgotten to put a deodorant in my bag and mid afternoon at work, the office was its usual 28 degrees (hideous air con wars!) and I felt the need to spray (!) so I got out the little can of impulse and had a quick spray around my general person (it is a body spray not a deodorant so you spray it on yourself as opposed to under your arms).
At first, I quite liked the smell but it was VERY strong and it settled to a very unnatural, heavy MELON scent. So, I was sat at work smelling like a melon. But strongly so. My error for not testing it in the shop and not realising how strong the scent was so my quite liberal quick "tsssssst" spray was threatening to stink out the office. I could see a few people's noses twitching and was just waiting for the "has someone just sprayed something?" questions... but thankfully on this day, my colleagues decided they were all too busy to make a big deal about a sudden melon smell coming from my general direction.
So, I would only recommend this if you love very strong melon fragrances and if you would like to smell like a walking watermelon. Although I am 29 and can still get away with quite young smelling fresh fruity scents (i'd like to think so anyway)- this is too "young" smelling. It is the sort of scent I would expect for a teen body spray- impulse could make an "Impulse Teen" like Sure "Girl" range to warn people.
With hindsight I have learned to spray sprays in store before I buy them and not to go on the can design as this will tell me NOTHING about the smell! I have left the spray in my drawer at work but I should really just get rid of it as it is quite embarrasing to use it as the scent is so strong it draws attention to itself.
On the plus side, the can size / shape is cute and 99p isnt too much of a loss for my poor experience!
The Impulse Cities collection has been around for quite a while now and contains 3 different fragrances. I got a gift set sometime this year from a family member that contained amongst other things these three "city" body sprays. I have now tried them all and I'm starting to work my way through reviewing them starting with the "New York" fragrance.
I don't really have any idea why this spray is marketed as a "New York" fragrance because Id be willing to bet that this doesnt smell anything like New York!
As mentioned in another dooyoo review on this product I think they have two different designs for the bottle of this spray. One that is pictured in the image attached to the review with a image of a girl on the can. And the other which is the one I own has a few New York themed images on the can such as an I Heart NY badge & a Broadway street sign. Personally I prefer the second can design it seems to relate to the theme of the scent more and I think it looks better and prettier.
The packaging is very girly which I really liked and it has the usual push down spray nozzle at the top to help minimise waste and just make overall application all the more easier.
This is a very fruity scent so if you don't like that type of fragrance then this isn't going to be a hit with you. I will say a little bit of this spray goes a LOOONG way and I think if you were to spray loads of it on yourself it would become to much and be pretty overpowering but if you just use the normal amount then you will smell fabulous.
I think this spray might be a little to much for some people who prefer a more understated musky scent but I love it and its better than smelling of BO right!
How Long Does The Smell Last?:
I spray this one first thing in the morning as I'm getting ready for work and it lasts me all day. A lot of deodorants and sprays seem to fade away after a few hours but this one is totally different. The smell doesnt last as long around 3-4 hours on my skin but the most important thing is it carries on working even after the smell has gone by stopping you from sweating and lets face it smelling pretty terrible.
Would I Recommend?:
I sure would! As I mentioned thought this spray may be a little too much for some people so I recommend you have a sniff in the shop before you actually purchase yourself a can that way it saves you the disappointment if you don't like it. I'm glad I tried this out and I will be buying a can of it from time to time maybe save it for special occasions and not everyday wear.
A can of this is available from all good chemists fro around 79p and one can lasts you for ages even if you wear it everyday like me.
Thanks For Reading

I'm more of a perfume girl but once I had sniffed some of this stuff in Superdrugs, I was genuinely hooked! The Impulse New York body spray is part of the Impluse City Collection. This collection consists of Impulse London, Impulse Paris and of course Impulse New York. I have bought all three and I must say, this one is my favourite. In my opinion, Paris is more for fancy occassions such as having dinner in a restaurant, London is great for going out shopping with friends till late and New York is perfect for everyday wear.
I have bought this product on several occassions and the packaging itself has changed over time. I remember the first time I bought this body spray, it had a young woman wearing summery clothes with an ickle dog beside her. More or less the same as the picture shown above. The can I have at the moment is slightly different. The whole of the can is a juicy green colour and the design consists of an I *heart* NY Badge, a Broadway sign, a few hearts here and there, earrings and little bits n bobs. It's a nice girly design but in my opinion, I prefer the previous packaging design. It represented the scent better.
Speaking of the scent, this is a gorgeous sweet, fruity-floral and fresh scent. I love it!
'Get ready to flirt in the city that never sleeps with Impulse New York! Its fragrance, a blend of apple, red fruit and jasmine notes, will leave you fabulously perfumed. Spray it all over your body and enjoy its captivating scent!' is the description at the back of the can. Very well described!
As the description states, the ingredients that make up this fabulous fragrant concoction are apple, red fruit and jasmine. I would have thought there would be more components to this scent but there you have it. This smells very sweet, it reminds me of sitting down on fresh juicy grass beside fragrant flowers and munching on sweet melons on a warm summery, breezy day. Lovely thoughts, eh? I would say this is more suited for the seasons of Spring and Summer but I think this would be great for brightening up your Winter! This truly is a unique scent, I think you have to actually smell it to capture the amazingness that it is!
Of course, this is a body spray so you wouldn't expect this to have the lasting power of an Eau De Parfum. The scent does start to fade over the day but you can still catch a few whiffs of the scent time after time. I like to spray this on my wrists, neck and all over my clothes to really make the scent last even more longer. I have been complimented many times when wearing this and when told what I have on, people are surprised to hear that its a body spray I'm wearing, not a perfume!
Impulse New York retails at £1.89 in Boots but I managed to snap this baby up on sale for a minor 86p from Superdugs!
Overall, I think this is a fantastic body spray for times when you prefer a more light and airy fragrance that won't give you a migraine. I'd say this is a tad too weak for Winter or more special events but it's lovely if you want a refreshing lift for the day. I think it's perfect for when I'm not in the mood for a perfume but still want to smell fragrant.
** INTRO **
I was in New York for a week's holiday in January of this year and knowing how much I loved it, a friend of mine had made up a 'New York themed' gift for my birthday recently.
The gift contained lots of 'big apple' themed goodies, and nestling among some of these was a little tin of 'Impulse' body spray. Looking a little closer, I could see that the spray was called 'New York' and was part of the 'City collection' from Impulse.
Intrigued, I immediately sprayed a little of the spray and we all had a bit of a sniff at it, to see what a 'New York type scent' smelled of! I can tell you that it bore no resemblance whatsoever of anything to do with NYC, but it's a really nice spray nevertheless!
I have sadly come to the end of the little canister of body spray now, probably because it is such a diddly little size - 75 ml to be exact - although I would point out that it lasted reasonably well, probably about two months or so.
** THE PACKAGING **
The green-coloured metallic tin of spray is a cylinder shape and has a built-in style of aerosol spray, so that you don't need to remove any lid or cap before you spray the scent over yourself - very handy if you are in a rush!
I did find that the design of the nozzle was sufficient in that it allowed quite a fine 'mist' to be sprayed and the little hole in the nozzle didn't allow TOO much of the product to escape through it, thus cutting down on excess spray being used (i.e. cutting down on waste).
I have actually seen two different designs for this tin, although both are green-coloured. My tin of New York spray does not have the picture of the girl on the front of the cannister, like the one shown in the Dooyoo page.
Instead, the spray I was given has some little New York themed symbols on the front of the canister, which I thought was a nice touch to the packaging! There are symbols such as a little 'I heart NY' badge, a 'Broadway' street sign and the like, and mixed together with a few little love hearts and stars, all in all the packaging is really quite girly! I didn't think this was overly girly, nor did it seem like a negative point, as this product IS for girls after all!
** THE FRAGRANCE **
I think that the scent definitely has a kind of 'fruity' undertone, and is quite sweet-smelling as a result. I would not say that it is at all over-bearing, although I think if you over-used the spray you might think it was... A little goes a long way with this scent! (I found this to be a positive point though, as it makes it last longer!)
The scent is quite a feminine one, although it is in no way floral or musky. I did find that I received compliments about my 'perfume' from both my partner and my sister on separate occasions, even though on both occasions I had no perfume on and was only wearing this Impulse spray.
I found that a little spray on my wrists and a general spray over my body was enough to give a light scent, although I did find that the scent faded after a while. This was a bit of a plus-point for me though, because I could still choose to wear my usual perfume whether I had used this body spray or not - the scent of the Impulse didn't interfere with the scent of my perfume in any way.
** OTHER POINTS/INFO **
I liked the fact that the little canister was so small and neat - only 75ml - and because it was so light I found it ideal to carry around in my bag with me, to 'freshen up' whilst I was out and about.
I am not usually one to use body sprays and the like, usually preferring to use deodorants and perfumes only but I can honestly say I have been well and truly converted! I intend to buy another tin of the New York body spray ASAP - it's just lovely!
I believe that the 'City Collection' of sprays from Impulse contains other fragrances in the collection, such as 'London' but I have yet to smell these so cannot comment.
The 'City Collection' of body sprays, including this New York version from 'Impulse' are currently on sale in all good supermarkets and drugstores. I have seen them on sale in Asda and Boots. You can expect to pay around £1.50 to the £2 mark for an Impulse spray.
Alternatively, the body spray can be purchased online from www.chemistdirect.co.uk for £1.99 for the 75 ml tin.
** WOULD I RECOMMEND? **
In a word, yes. I found that the spray was pleasant, without being over-powering or sickly, and I did find that the fragrance was nice for everday use. I'm not sure it would be suitable (or strongly scented enough) for a night out or special occassion, but the scent was generally very pleasant.
I also found that the spray caused no irritation to my overly sensitive skin, which is not the case with every spray or scented product I have used before, so the Impulse New York spray gets another thumb's up from me for that!
All in all, I would highly recommend this spray. I cannot really fault anything about it and will definitely buy it again... Five stars from me! :-D
